On the other hand, I have a cheap guitar that was a hand-me-down from my sister. It's a Gibson acoustic from about 1965, my dad bought it used for about $25 in 1970, now it's worth over $2500.

But not much junkier than what you can get now for $25 (a used strat copy?) and it will give the kids something to play with other than the real guitar. (My parents unwittingly let me play around with my mom's old $50 guitar she had from college. Thankfully I didn't break it: it's a 1935 Martin.
