The biggest impact is in the carbon footprint. The CO2 relased by cars burning fossil fuels was taken out of the loop millions of years ago and has been stored as oil in the ground. Everything I've read though says that ethanol a net energy loser in the end once you factor in the energy needed to grow and harvest the crops (an important distinction). Then the argument turns into whether or not you should count that energy in the equation, which seems silly to me.

My folks live in the west Chicago 'burbs, and it's definitely a progressive area. I don't doubt the large number of E85 stations there. I would really be curious to see how many folks really run it. It's often cheaper by the gallon than 87 octane gasoline, but since you get less power from a gallon of E85 than you do from a gallon of gasoline, you actually get less MPG and have to fill up more often. I wonder how many folks really trade the convenience for the greater good, and how many just feel better about themselves for having the "Flex Fuel" logo on their Surburban.

Brian

Comments on GM prepping Chevy Sequel fuel cell vehicle for 2010

BZZT!
