But reading this is really making my blood boil.

The points have been made a million times, but I'm starting to see it logically: the Euro gamers are getting raped. We're getting a console that can do less than the US models, later than the US models, with a chassis that is presumabley less sturdy than the US models. All for more money than the US models.

I'm going to reserve judgement until the console launches and specifics are available, but I'm edging mighty strongly to the 360 side. I never owned a PS2, so half of the reason (well, maybe 1/4) that I bought a PS3 was so I could play all of the great PS2 games that are out there. I've already bought more PS2 games than PS3 games, since the PS3 lineup totally sucks thus far, and PS2 games can be purchased on the cheap. The EC isn't stupid, they do things often to promote large businesses investing in the EU. Even though it doesn't always look like it.

Take the Windows "N" editions. The EC wasn't stupid, it knew Microsoft had the right to include a media player. But by offering a version without it, they took the complaint against Microsoft and transferred it to the choice of the OEMs. There couldn't be a complaint that the OEMs weren't choosing the N editions, so it basically voided the case, whilst giving prosecutors the appearance of success. The prosecution was happy, because it "won", and Microsoft was happy, because the world didn't change. It was the best decision Microsoft could hope for, yet it was seen by many as the EC being idiotic.

Point of the story: Don't take these antitrust things at face value. Sony are sticking it to us again. I have preordered a PS3 for 24th March, paid £50 deposit ($100) for a machine I had read the specs of (USA & JAPAN) but am potentially ending up with an inferior machine. I think it is time to cancel the pre-order, retrieve my deposit and wait and see the reviews (instead of making the review). Sony - you suck!!

michaelmakro

Comments on

I think most well-informed folks know the PS3 isn't worth their cash by now. Other than Sony, no. All that we do know is that Sony has been working on full software backwards compatibility for a while now but were unable to complete it in time for the launch of the consoles and that such software emulation would allow the removal of costly hardware and might eventually allow for upscaling of each game (as PSXe does for example).

*gasp* Sony doing something that makes pure business sense and may be beneficial to the customer at the same time? The move makes perfect sense, they were working on a software PS2 emulator and until that was ready they were going to ship the PS3 with actual PS2 hardware.
