Do you really have nothing better to do with your time? If this is true, then you Brian are the social reject.

That aside, your statement is entirely inaccurate, heres why.

Lets say you buy a game for $50 that you will play for 100 hours in its lifetime. Lets also say that every 2 and a half years this hobby requires an investment of $500, and we'll assume that the total enjoyment from this investment is about 500 hours, which is probably a low estimate. This would mean that the hourly cost/benefit ratio is about $1.50 per hour. There are still Amega crackers around today, working on cracking Wii titles and such. As long as there have been people selling computer games, there have been groups out there cracking and releasing them. It's just that it used to be more of a closed group because the majority of trading of games were done on (somewhat) closely guarded BBS boards (although Hong Kong has always has a history of selling physical piracy... I'm sure there are other places as well). Even then it could take days to download a couple floppies worth of data to complete one game =p.

However with speed and space increases over the years and somewhat anonominity (depending on the method used), comes a time where anyone with a decent connection can download nearly everything over usenet or bittorrent (or bounced + sftp'd access to a topsite if you have that rare l33tness =p, which I used to have when I was younger and didn't have a better use for my time).

Support the gaming industry!

- Tony R.

Tony Rayo

Comments on

From what I have seen, the PC gaming market is indeed declining, but mostly due to a general increase in console gaming. Nor does it take into account international sales where there happen to be more PC gamers in places like europe than in the US. Some people might say MMO subscriptions don't count but they are games after all. So if you add those into the US retail figures you might get a figure significantly higher than what they show there. Now whether or not that compares to console sales is another thing as the PC never has sold as many games as a console where every console was sold for games... but I don't think US retail sales are the full picture.

smoke Tetsu

Comments on

Intel Integrated GFX running DX10?!

NO WAI!
YA WAI!
O RLY?
YA RLY!

:HEAD EXPLODES:

Sergio

Comments on

the 915 chipset needs to get a wddm driver. and soon. i can't run aero just because intel wants to line their pockets with my upgrades.

kleg

Comments on

PC gamers are also girls who don't live with their parents and just happen to like gaming and are total dorks *waves*

We're rare (as rare as a new PC game that's any good), but still.

I'd like to think the decline in PC game sales has more to do with games like OMG YET ANOTHER WW2 FPS and YAY EVEN MORE OF THE SAME RTS YOU'VE PLAYED SINCE WARCRAFT.

Innovation: not the PC gaming world's strong point these days.

Jamie

Comments on

I'm amazed everytime I see Crysis. I think most people have the 'if it's really good I'll buy it!!!' mindset when pirating, and actually DO end up buying the full versions of the major titles so they can jump into multiplayer immediately, etc. but don't feel the same about some other titles. Huge replay value through multiplayer and ever-increasing mods only hurt sales (of other games) even more, as stuff close to, or sometimes exceeding, the quality of higher-end minor games keep getting released for free.

Console game hacks are a much lesser threat, as using them often involves some sort of console mods.
