For now it's good for lavalamp demos and crudely resizing images."

iPhone's coming out in the states in June, and worldwide by 2008. Let's see what people think of it, then try you might change you're mind. What I would ready love is the existing iMac with a keyboard that is roughly the same dimentions as the existing Apple keyboard, but instead of having physical button and a mouse, this keyboard would have a screen - a multi-touch touch screen. Apple is saying that multi-touch is as important as the mouse and the clickwheel. Well if they think it is and it tunrs out that they are right, maybe what I want will be what I get. Imagine you don't want a QWERTY keyboard, you want a DVORAK Keyboard - no problem, set that in keyboard preferences under keyboard style. Imagine you're at work with one of these new imaginary iMac's, you go for coffee, and when you come back instead of seeing the usual QWERTY keyboard you see a message "You have 1 new Mail! Read now -- Read later" You touch 'Read now' and your Mac launches Mail, you touch "Read later" and that message changes back to a QWERTY keyboard. On the iPhone for example, the only time I saw Jobs actually use two fingers on the display at the same time was when he was resizing images and zooming. Not durring typing or navigating the UI. I mean it is nice technology, but not really something that I would take advantage of daily. Touch screen displays have been around for a long time, and so have soft-keys, it's not like Apple invented the idea.

Typing on the iPhone is going to be a nightmare. Count all the mistakes Steve made when he was typing on the iPhone, and while there might be T9 style word guessing and error correction, it's still not going to be anywhere near perfect. Hate to rain on the parade and all, but I'm a realist.

Yes, it's teh new sexy...but how actually useful is it?

I use several kinds of tablets, a tablet PC, a Wacom Intuous 3 tablet, and I have a Wacom Cintiq at work. It can be a LOT of work to reach out to a display (I mean the physical act of reaching, moving your arms) and working on a screen. Granted, it's better for me, because doing what I do(drafting, graphic media, etc.) it improves my workflow dramatically...in SOME applications, like for instance, Corel Painter, Corel Designer, Rhino, and Autocad (for SOME situations). But...

I have to stand up to work effectively. The large size of the screen simply doesn't it lend itself very well to sitting and leaning forward over it on a normal desk.

I've tried using tablets in Blender...and let me tell you, it's just not going to do the job a lot of blender users incorrectly THINK it will. For various reasons. Item #1...PRECISION. How precise is a fingertip? It's not. How precise is a wacom stylus? PIXEL LEVEL. Do the math, and while you're at it, think about the distance between the "Yes", "No", and "Cancel" buttons that appear from time to time.

And how about pressure? I'd venture to say that these screens probably will have very rudimentary pressure support, so all you blender users are likely to be disappointed with it for things like scuplting...stick with a tablet.

Gesture-based action support? What good is that in the long run, really? I would see this really as more of a useful thing for someone who's actually at your desk, while you work the keyboard and mouse, they can finger your screen and work with you. As a collaboration tool, yeah, maybe. I could see that. As an individual tool? Your own hands would obscure the screen a lot of the time and you wouldn't be able to see what you were doing in some cases. (Incidentally, this is a real world problem faced by people who use Cintiq monitors and TabletPCs already.)

I notice that the applications mentioned (the actual uses) are all really "toys" in the long run when it comes down to it. Not really production level (as in getting things done) tasks at all, but rather just "supposedly efficient" ways of manipulating some visualization. Like...Google Earth. Or a "3 dimensional strand of DNA". Who's actually going to be doing that for more than 5 minutes?

When it comes down to it, it's impossible to beat the speed and efficiency of a keyboard + mouse for most things. The ratio of real estate covered versus effort applied simply speaks efficiency. I, for one, don't see it becoming really huge. I don't see the need. On an iPod or an iPhone, why not? It's great for that. That's the kind of thing that would benefit from having two fingers used on it, or maybe some kind of media tablet. Great idea. A desktop PC? I just don't see it.

ShortWave

Comments on Apple's next big move: Multitouch displays?

I'm sure Multi-Touch will get smudged and oily, but maybe not as quickly as we assume. My mommy taught me to wash my hands whenever I use a bathroom which is probably why my touchpad doesn't get that bad (the biggest threat is muffin crumbs at Starbucks!). MT has so much potential for music software, photo editing, graphics, even gaming, and it can also display adjustable QWERTY for the right applications. You place your hands in a comfortable position on the display, and there's your perfectly sized, ergonomically shaped keyboard!

markwk52
