I'm using a system called bio-feedback to help me with motivational and organizational skills, and it often comes in the form of a game. The point of the game is to set your mind in a certain state before you can get past any of the objectives, and it works very well in my experience. Some of the cheaper, home-owned bio-feedback systems (though these are often attached to the fingers and really just read things like pulse rates, skin temperature, and skin moisture) are only around $200 including the software, so maybe in a few years this will be a complete reality.

Zorque

Comments on Project Epoc thought-powered controller: could gaming get any lazier?

Zorque would you please provide me info about the unit you have?

l4ces

Comments on Project Epoc thought-powered controller: could gaming get any lazier?

Soooo... I think it was called the "Mind Drive". There were a couple of games bundled with it and a lie detector program.

I to am/was a bit skeptical about how well you could actually read/capture a persons thoughts through their finger tips.

Amusingly enough, since I was only about 12 or 13 when I saw this thing, I was with my father (he being a techy as well). The demo game was a first person perspective skiing game. I tried it,and I was actually able to control the game well enough to complete the course (avoiding trees and whatnot). So was dad. Then he had me play it again, this time I closed my eyes and he told me either to maneuver left or right to avoid obstacles.

We completed the course...or at least nearly, he purposely had me steer into one of the last trees to rule out the possibility that the demo was rigged to always complete.

Of course, after that he tried overtly controlling the game with his finger itself, as the fingers slot had a very obvious pad of connectors (like the chip in a smart card). By covering only the left or right panels he could effectively control the game...even in opposition to his thoughts (think left, and press right...it went right...).

I hope this new device is more convincing...

OddManOut

Comments on Project Epoc thought-powered controller: could gaming get any lazier?

Way back in the late 1980's I remember seeing an ad for a company that had a Mac only mouse that was operated by electrodes in a headband. It was not reading descrete thoughts but just the pre-verbal commands your brain would send to your vocal cords. You trained it by wearing the headband, moving the mouse up and saying "up", moving it down and saying "down" etc. Just like the the fighter jet in the Clint Eastwood movie "Firefox". Even though the helmit had electrodes it was not reading actual thoughts, he had to remember to think about saying the words in Russian so it would pick up the signal sent from the brain to the vocal cords. I wonder if this is still using the same basic set up or if it can actualy descerne syntax, word order and meaning from thought commands?

skonofvulcan

Comments on Project Epoc thought-powered controller: could gaming get any lazier?

*taps head* Think think think...

Scorpious

Comments on Project Epoc thought-powered controller: could gaming get any lazier?

Emotiv Seeking Volunteers for PAID Brain Research!
