He has a good point. This is an impressive creation and one that looks to be a whole boatload of fun. But as of right now, the user base just isn't there. And considering that this resembles a Sims game, you're going to lower the user-base further - I personally am not a big Sims fan!

The other issue is price. The PS3 still costs a tremendous amount! This isn't the gold mine that will save the PS3. (gamertag?) I see myself spending zero time in the homeworld (which was a great game btw)socializing with weirdos and creeps who choose to stand around and watch virtual TVs. The same reason I don't really like the Mii feature on my Wii. Great, he stands there, now what? You can invite people you meet in Home to play other games (good) but can you see your friends and invite them to play other games while you're playing a different game?

It's a neat feature but not nearly as good as Xbox Live in my opinion, just because it doesn't seem to be "always on". During any Xbox game, I can pull up my guide and see everything I want to know about the people I'm playing with as well as what my friends are playing. I don't need to ask them to invite me to their trophy room.

LittleBigPlanet is going to ROCK!

Kevo

Comments on Joystiq and Engadget live at Sony's 2007 GDC keynote

If people are afraid that the Home network will turn into some desolate neighbourhood filled with esoteric gamer nerds... I think Sony might actually pull this off granted that the Playstation 3 as a whole feels like it's geared to those Yuppies that [a] can afford such a beast and [b] are generally educated... which could mean for a less nerd experience. :-)

irb

Comments on Joystiq and Engadget live at Sony's 2007 GDC keynote

Wow. But I think that this is a huge case of "too little too late". If Sony had implemented this from the very beggining, made the main menu part of this, and made this a central piece of the online experience, then the PS3 wouldn't be making a bombing run. Imagine if the PS3 booted up and you start with your character in your apartment. There are different rooms, labeled games, movies, music, and settings. You would walk into each room to boot the game, listen to music, etc. The "trophys" just sound like garbage though. On the 360, achievements are right in your face and are a huge part of the experience. On the PS3, trophies are just going to be there. If I owned a PS3, I probably wouldn't play through a game a second time just to get a virtual metal. They don't seem to function as "achievements", just something to look at after beating a game. Plus, the developers won't be able to do anything interesting with them, like kill 20,759 zombies for a trophy.
(BTW, this press conference completely owns their E3 conference)

Kris

Comments on Joystiq and Engadget live at Sony's 2007 GDC keynote

and is free, i don't get sh** for free for my 50 dollar subscription @ XBOX LIVE but wallpaper I'm sorry themes

Larry Clark

Comments on Joystiq and Engadget live at Sony's 2007 GDC keynote

I'd be cautious of the "Sony is free" comments. I wouldn't bet for a second that Sony isn't also going to start squeezing us on microtransactions for avatar t-shirts and new sofas, etc. now that they have a medium to do that. I don't have a problem with $50 for Live. I think it's a fair price for a great service. I don't think this Home is an answer to Live either.

LittleBigPlanet will probably make me buy a PS3.
