They found out the downfalls, and switched to B&W LCDs. Everyone bitched and moaned about losing color and gaining a gigantic "frame" around each LCD screen (thus decreasing screen size and ugliness of the keys), so they went back to OLEDs, which natively have no "frame" requirement and don't need a backlight. So, until you yourself personally create better display technology, stop complaining. They countered this downfall of the keyboard by integrating replaceable keys, which I think is a fantastic move. And to everybody claiming "vaporware", why in the hell would a vaporware company pay damned good money for a booth at a convention? Let alone pay good money for an ostensibly oversized display keyboard.

Also - Consumers won't be buying this keyboard, but graphic design, photo, audio, and video firms will likely be plunking down the change. What's a $1500 keyboard in a $90k audio workstation? What's happening here is that these people want high-end products for low-end prices, but it doesn't work like that, this product is for high-end users and businesses.

Also, as Kev said, the people who will buy this keyboard are the kind of people who upgrade computer parts regularly. I pretty much replace every part of my computer every year, two at the most (just one part at a time every couple months), so I don't see the problem with a 5 year lifetime. In 5 years there will be a newer one that is much better anyway, that's just how the world of technology is, and the people who do spend this money to get this keyboard will be exactly the kind of people who won't sit on a keyboard for 5 years.

Klaus Burton

Comments on

You replace your mouse every year? It may be excessive to you but for people like me who work full-time at a computer as well as use it recreationally it isn't excessive.

I value my health, so I buy new monitors, keyboards, chairs and mice when technology improves. I, and my clients, also appreciate improved productivity, which is enhanced by new technology. For example when I do graphic design work, an accurate mouse is a must; the more accurate it is, the more accurate I can be in a shorter amount of time. Having more than one monitor also works dramatically. Upgrading to the latest hardware allows me to run the latest software, which is also obviously a requirement for web and print design and coding. The quicker APS is at intensive functions, the quicker and more productive I am.
There are dozens of valid reasons why people like me upgrade constantly. I suspect a lot of people who frequent this website agree with me, after all this site is all about new technology.

What I'm trying to point out is that people like me (and there are a lot of us out there) are the target audience for this keyboard as far as individual users go.
I would find it very productive to have the keys change for each program I use, especially considering Adobe's programs have an abundance of quick-keys. It would save having to press four keys simultaneously just to select a function.

Does that clear it up? I realise it would be excessive for you to do it, but different people lead different lives and I hope this has given you a better understanding of why "excessive" isn't a universally accurate term.

Klaus Burton

Comments on

To anyone who buys this keyboard, I say this... As long as it is not too obvious seeing the main gadget sites, including yours, engaged in a ridiculously disproportional campaign for a definitely interesting, but rather 'normal' cool/innovative/breakthrough product (With a price tag whic will prove why this product is supermediocre). Just because a company has funds doesn't mean they're going anywhere. Every year, thousands of things are shown off at CES that NEVER make it to market. This was shown off years ago, and not only took YEARS to even get a final shipping date, it's impractical and absurdly expensive. I sincerely believe they are digging a hole for themselves, and they will soon be in debt and go out of business unless they can lower the price by more than 1/2. Currently, there is absolutely no one who would benefit from this keyboard.
