Maff, what are you talking about? The event was in London, which is the capital of England, and is representative of English behaviour. The whole of Britain is being stung for the PS3.

the UK is actually "The United Kingdom of Great Britain" and incorporates 4 distinct countries; England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, plus various pricipalities including The Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey

I am both "English" and "British", someone born in Glasgow would be both "Scottish" and "British", much in the same way that you could be "Californian" and "American"

The UK has a single seat of Government responsible for 'homeland security' of ALL the members, with local governments (Scotland, Wales and IoM to mention a few) which have various degrees of autonomy (which came about by something called 'devolution')

Therefore, it is perfectly resonable for me to declare that I come from either England, Great Britain or the UK.

Almost right - according to the front of my passport it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, where GB actually only refers to England, Scotland and Wales. Plus I personally wouldn't call all four distinct countries, but that's a matter of personal opinion!

In other words, you don't have a California Passport, you have a USA Passport. This is exemplified by the fact that the Scottish have their own legal system, which by definition, dictates the fact it is a country (i.e. the seperation of State and Church).

The "United Kingdom" is a political union created in 1801, but any resident can define their nationality according the country (i.e. English, Scottish, Welsh) or the union (British)

In fact, "Great Britain" is the largest island of the British Isles (incorporating England, Scotland and Wales), and not country.

The No.10 Website (http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page823.asp) states the following:-

"The United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Its full name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

Futhermore, the battle between HD-DVD and BluRay rumbles on and British consumers aren't going to let go of their cash that easily.

I'll admit there's probably quite a few Americans who couldn't tell you, but I'd like to think the Engadget writers/readers are a bit more intelligent than that.

I don't think it's really the same thing to compare Scotland/Northern Ireland with states in the US. I'm no expert but I'd have to think that a country that's part of a larger whole must have more autonomy than a state that's part of a country.

Most people pay/don't pay their TV license regardless of being given a free HDTV.
I hardly think having to resort to that kind of PR exercise can be described as "coming out smiling".
Considering right now Microsoft has the high ground in terms of price/perceived_performance ratio and cost per console and launch titles.
Its clear to see that Sony are playing catch up, which is never a good thing to be doing in business.
