Seriously, I never understood the idea behind staggered analog sticks, it just doesn't make one lick of sense to me. I love the feel of the PS2/3 controllers also because they don't have cheap feeling bulging buttons like the 360 and Xbox. Those buttons feel like they're made of Playskool plastic, plus they bulge out rather than being flat.

Also, the 360 controller is still so fat for my hands. I'm not overweight like the average American, so maybe that's why, but it also feels and looks really cheap.

I will never give up my trusty old PS2 controllers.

Kev50027

Comments on Ben Heck's PS360: SIXAXIS-stuffed Xbox controller

Well, I'm inclined to think that if you're a human being like the rest of us, then the 360 controller would have to fit your hands better, no matter what you say. The PS2 controller isn't bad at all, but it is kind of an odd shape.

The reason the analog sticks are in different places on the 360 controller is because most games don't have you using both at the same time. So far, I think the only games that do on the 360 are FPS titles, and not including those I can only think of like 4 that do on the PS2. Personally the way the Xbox controllers do it makes more sense to me, but that's just personal preference; the other way works pretty well too.

Finally, I have to disagree with you on the cheapness thing. I'm usually pretty calm, but I had a particularly angry moment while playing Test Drive Unlimited and totally smashed my 360 controller into my coffee table in a brief fit of rage... The table has a considerable hole in it now but the controller was completely unaffected, not a single scratch. They're very solid, and none of the buttons feel loose like on my PS2 controllers.

Aaron

Comments on Ben Heck's PS360: SIXAXIS-stuffed Xbox controller

I once again disagree. The 360 controller is pudgy, and limits the movement of my hand, while the PS2/3 controller lets air in, and allows me a degree of freedom that the 360 does not. While almost the entire hand is in contact with the 360 controller, only parts are in contact with the PS2 controller, which means it's usually easier to move your hand around to reach a different button or set of controls.

As far as the buttons, I don't understand how you cannot feel how cheap the 360 buttons are. They feel more like the buttons on a 1980's arcade than a next gen console controller. While on the PS2, it's easy to adjust how hard you're pressing down on the button, the 360 controller is more either pressed entirely down or not. Also, I can't stand the analog stick design on the Xbox. The analog sticks have an indentation in the middle that is supposed to make it easy to control, but in my opinion it makes it harder. I prefer the rounded top of the analog sticks on the PS2 controller.

The PS2/3 controllers are also far lighter than the 360 controllers, and they're smaller and have more buttons. I also prefer the D-pad on the PS2 by far, the D-pad on the 360 and Xbox is just horrible.

As far as games that require both analog sticks, you must not be thinking. The placement of the D-Pad on the 360 suggests that you would use it rather than the left analog stick, but this is never the case, and in most games you use the buttons on the right and the analog stick on the left, meaning the D-Pad and analog stick would make more sense to switch places.

Also, the white and black buttons on the Xbox were always an afterthought, thrown wherever there was room with no thought to useability.

Kev50027

Comments on Ben Heck's PS360: SIXAXIS-stuffed Xbox controller

You are an idiot being over weight has nothing to do with the size of your hands u are just a pissed of sony fanboy who can handle the fact that the controller is severely outdated and in desperate need of a redisign

Gene

Comments on Ben Heck's PS360: SIXAXIS-stuffed Xbox controller

Gene, you are wrong. I'm not overweight like the average American, so maybe that's why, but it also feels and looks really cheap."

dude, last time i checked being fat and big hands didn't have anything to do with each other. as a matter of fact, the fatter you are, the fatter your fingers are, and the harder it would be to get your hands around a controller. Just cause someone has small hands...

As for it being cheap, i feel that it's the most solid controller i have ever used, it very well balanced, and it's taken a drop onto my tile floor a dozen or so times without even a scratch or the battery falling off. i would say the same thing for the PS2 controllers, but they are lighter and feel like they don't weigh enough to take damage from a fall.
As for the SIXAXIS, the plastic on it just feels really cheap, even though i like the button resistance better, and it has a more satisfying click, but is harder to get a partial(lighter) button press that some games require. I just like how i can use my finger tip for button presses on the 360 controller rather than the base or center of my finger since the buttons are closer.

Of course this is all based on hand size, since someone with smaller hands would be able to push the SIXAXIS buttons the same way i press the 360 buttons, so i guess your view is just as subjective as mine. It also makes sense when you think about it though, since PS3 is made by Sony, who has traditionally catered to the japanese who have on average smaller hands than americans.
I just kinda wish these companies would make more than one size controller, i mean look at NBA players who can easily palm a basketball, there is NO WAY they can hold a controller as confortably as the average person.
But i guess i would prefer Sony crank out some more(good) games first before they focus on the controller issues again....

Grant

Comments on Ben Heck's PS360: SIXAXIS-stuffed Xbox controller

So someone is a "moron" cause they haven't heard about something that wasnt widely televised? First of all, I like the placement of the left analog stick being to the top left, and not in the left center, it gives you more balanced control. I like the PS's touch sensitive buttons ALOT more than just touch sensitive triggers.
The PS3's battery is ALOT better than the crappy one that the Xbox360 offers, since even the smallest shock can shut off the 360 controller! Rumble? I never use it! for the whole time i've had my xbox360, rumble was turned off. It's just a generic battery waisting novelty that is annoying, Why is it such a big deal!?

Anyway, I can see this being something cool for those who are used to the xbox360 controller, hopefully the facebuttons, including the d-pad, are still touch sensitive!

idfk

Comments on Ben Heck's PS360: SIXAXIS-stuffed Xbox controller

Actually, the Xbox 360 (as well as the original Xbox) DOES have touch-sensitive face buttons. In my opinion they actually work a bit better than the PS2 analog buttons (can't say for the PS3), however I don't know of any games for the 360 that use them.

I've never seen rumble shut off the controller, that's pretty weird. Is the battery just loose on that particular controller...?

Aaron

Comments on Ben Heck's PS360: SIXAXIS-stuffed Xbox controller

No, it's does that for all 3 of my controllers, rumble doesn't turn them off, but if I were to toss the controller to someone else, it'll turn off! even when I set it down on a table, or just lightly tap the battery pack, on any of my controllers. I never knew that the buttons were touch sensitive. If they are then why don't they work on ANY of my xbox360 games!?

idfk

Comments on Ben Heck's PS360: SIXAXIS-stuffed Xbox controller

I will NEVER buy a playstaiton roduct simply because I hate the controller so much. The left stick hurts my thumb after a while. It needs to be placed where the D-pad is and the d-pad need to be placed where the stick is. Also, the stick itself feels like some big buldge tht has you losing grip. It needs an indent. The gamecube controller was also awkward and slipped a little with its buldge, but at least the stick was smaller so I could put my whole thumb over it. And last, the handels need to be re-designed. Xbox controller S felt good, but360 feels perfect. The handels completely mold to your hands. The PS2/3 handels ffel like cheap plastick stick you hold onto. the ONLY thing that the 360 does not have nailed own, is the D-pad. Oherwise the controller is perfection

Anyone who prefers the PS2/3 controller has never used a 360 controller for more then a day. If I could get a hold of one of these controller mods, I just might want to check out the ps3 in 2 years when it has some games for it.

mike

Comments on Ben Heck's PS360: SIXAXIS-stuffed Xbox controller

The 360 has to have the worst D-pads in existence. Maybe cause I'm not a huge FPS fan or something but 360 controller just doesn't cut it for fighting games and RPGs and such. The d-pad is horrible. Fingers easily slip off them since they aren't trigger-shaped. You also cannot rest your fingers on them comfortably without accidentally hitting them either. Try tossing the controller on the couch after starting a Blu-ray movie. Instant FF/RW. It's annoying.

The 360 controller has solid triggers and buttons that response as expected. Again the d-pad is the exception; but it's easy to fix with a thin pad underneath.

I have a Chinese rip off DUALSHOCK controller from ebay, and the SIXAXIS feels exactly like it. The 360 controller is definitely more solid; it can take abuse. And the controllers never disconnect or need to be resynchronized just because an update occurred.

I think the symmetrical design of the Playstation controller needs to be sunsetted as well. Several years ago, most games used the d-pad so having your thumbs rest symmetrically made sense. Now that analog sticks are much more prevalent and the d-pad is now just a hot-key button (think FPS, God of War, Final Fantasy, or even racing games), it needs to be put in a lesser used spot. Not to mention symmetrical analogs cause "thumb bumping" when moving right and looking left.

This mod simply makes sense.

SuicideNinja
