Apple (NO)Care claimed it was damage, not a manufacturer defect even though the net is littered with similar cracked screen tales. Apple considers this "not factual." They would only reconsider this if the crack was due to manufacturer defect. It is Catch-22, because they never consider it as a manufacturer defect because they always check-off the repair as damage.

Apple refuses to share "factual" information concerning how many "damaged" macbook screens come in for repair. I would like to trust them on this, but they certainly do not trust me on my issue. If you look at the screen on the macbook there are two bezels that are supposed to stop the screen hitting the keyboard.

This is the exact same spot where the cracks appear, so it's more of a design fault rather than manufacturing.

I took mine to the Apple store in Kingston after getting no joy from Applecare. The only thing I find unsettling with the macbooks is apple only has two models to worry about. Yea you can change there processor, memory etc but the enclosure, MB screen etc should all be the same and you would think this would make quality control a lot easier for them as opposed to HP or Dell who have many many different models and configurations to deal with. These were both repaired by apple under warranty. In 5 months my laptop went in for repair 5 times and after this I ended up having a arguement with tech support, being put through to level 2 tech support and then having the whole system replaced, hmm, and now on this new macbook (which is slightly better spec than the orrignal), im having problems with the mouse button and with overheating

the interesting thing is that I carry my macbook is a very tight camera bag (where there is a lot of pressure on the case) to jobs , so I am a prime candidate for this sort of damage. There is no sign of any distress on my palmrest.

It may be worth mentioning that my palm rest was replaced with the newer "non-stain" version when I had my "RSS" repair done. I'm not going to say I think people are being abusive to their MacBooks, but it sure seems like they'd have to be to cause this damage. Just closing the lid gently doesn't put any sort of heavy pressure or impact on this spot, and when the lid's closed, the only way these little plastic parts would press against each other hard enough to cause damage would be if you were squeezing the bejeezus out of your MacBook.

I also heard about screens "spontaneously" cracking, and I lean toward thinking that some people are pulling/slamming the MacBook shut by pulling one corner of the screen/lid and slamming it down, as if it's a clamshell iBook or a lunchbox.

It's not delicate, but it can't take abuse on a regular basis. It's a $1000+ piece of technology, and you should be CAREFUL with it. Don't just pull on a corner of the lid and let it slap shut! GUIDE IT down.

Seriously though, I'm really disappointed with the build quality of the MacBooks - I had no problems like this whatsoever with my original iBook. And as a student, I can't afford to part with my machine for another couple weeks 'til the semester ends. While it's questionable why this occurred in the first place (I never mishandle my MacBook - it cost an incredible amount and I couldn't live without it) I cannot fault Apple's response in repairing it.

Some people have blamed poor Chinese materials. Quite frankly, plastic is plastic - it's the same compound where ever you go. Not only that, but China must be the world's biggest producer of plastic, so they surely have the most production experience!

I have read reports that in the later revisions (I have a Core Duo version), this area has been reinforced from underneath. How true this is, I have no idea. In the meantime, at least the fault is being repaired under warranty.]]>May 2nd 2007 3:53AM
