I hear all the Microsoft is doing only work with voice recgonition thing. Um, haven't you noticed that you can buy touchscreen UMPC's that run Windows on it? Even Vista on a tablet has improved touchscreen work quite a bit. Does Apple happen to have any touchscreen laptops? And although voice recognition might not be useful in some situations, so does multi-touch. Suppose you happen to have your fingers dirty, and couldn't find a napkin. Will you be able to touch your phone? There can be smudges, pressure might be applied to hard that it will crack the screen, and a bunch of other stuff that could be wrong with touch sensitivity. But something that we see here, is that Microsoft is working on touch just as well as voice. Could there possibly be a future where we can use both on the same device? And this video shows how useful touch can be in work. The technology in this video is quite interesting, and is nothing to scoff at.

What I think is, is that you can't stand to see Microsoft do something good. No company is perfect, but when a company tries, that's at least something. This video was pretty neat in exploring areas of technology that could be helpful to business workers. Sorry, but you can't go away saying that Microsoft is a loser for introducing some new ways to help with work.

michael

Comments on Microsoft shows off DigiDesk workstation of the future

only farmers have dirty fingers

jason

Comments on Microsoft shows off DigiDesk workstation of the future

I can't believe that why there are so many apple fanboys. They can innovate, sure, but what have they ever done that is original? It rarely fits in with their best interests, which is to ultimately maximize money making, which doesn't call for rapid innovation except when really required. So a lot of their 'dazzling' work comes from casual interests in purer research from universities and the few people who can carry on pushing the edge, rather than pursuing the immediate bottom line, in a corporate job.

I find this design kind of hideous, it seems like a combination between a really retro console (eg from a nuke plant) and a console from 1960s star trek.

It also has an anti human feel to it, it would be a very dangerous situation to have people with this much control doing everything "digitally." Really, when talking about such a control system today, you'd really need to deal with the subject in a much more human way, to rely on other people's judgments who are experienced and involved in finer details. So while it's interesting to show someone pushing up a video slider to ramp up production, it would have been a more worthwhile scenario having some person to person communication involved, and they made no effort to put a human face on any of this. I don't know too many companies that would totally miss this element.

The Starfire video (from what I remember) was much better in that regard. I guess it all depends on who these videos are being produced for. Starfire was for product designers, this is for factory managers.

k0a10

Comments on Microsoft shows off DigiDesk workstation of the future

I love how this has turned into a Microsoft bashing session, and a Pro-Apple fanboy hot spot, rather than talking about how big of an innovation this is.

This thing will make businesses and factories MUCH more efficient.

Zeus the God

Comments on Microsoft shows off DigiDesk workstation of the future

If anyone's been lucky enough to visit the "Home of the Future" demo center on the Microsoft Campus in Redmond, WA, they will tell you that this kind of thing has been "baking" for at least 4 or 5 years now in various iterations at Microsoft Research ("baking" being a pun, as the first time I saw this it was an interactive cookbook where you put your ingredients on a counter, the computer came up with recipes, then laid out the a baking template on the counter for you to mix and shape the dough). The technology is here, but often the software is immature, the hardware is unwieldy, it doesn't test well (read: people aren't ready for it), or the solution is too cost-prohibitive to sell as a product (read: maybe only 10 people in the world can afford it, so it doesn't make sense to sell it). Remember that it is not all just software - there is great innovation in electronics and hardware that the solution is dependent on.
