Nyko's PlayStation 3 Intercooler gets reviewed
Just over a year ago, Nyko busted out a lucrative solution to the world of overheating problems that hordes of Xbox 360 users were experiencing, and even after being lambasted for causing consoles to draw an unsafe amount of electricity, the company hasn't learned a thing. Unlike Pelican's attempt at a snap-on cooling solution for the PS3, Nyko's two-piece Intercooler (larger picture after the break) holds tight to the problematic power pass-through design which could presumably put undue stress on your machine's power supply when running things in high gear. Nevertheless, IGN's review saw no scorching problems during the time it was used, and while it did manage to cool the unit down during hardcore gaming sessions, it came at a cost. The noise level experienced a noticeable increase, but they were impressed by the user-controllable fan speed knob that allowed them to ratchet things down whilst watching a Blu-ray movie. In a brief comparison between the two current options, there didn't seem to be a decisive winner, but judging by Nyko's previous mishap and its refusal to update the design, the choice should be fairly clear.

Why would you even need this?
Their haven't been reports of overheating consoles, unlike that other console that shall go nameless.
I've run @Home for a number of days straight, and the PS3 has never given me a problem.
That's the difference between a REAL hardware company and the wanna be's.
Your comments: That's good additiong for PS 3. But I prefer play the PS3 in the cool
air conditioned room. So not only PS3 get the breeze but also the
player (me!!!)

I've been running the PS3 24 hours a day since folding@home came out. Never had a problem with heat at all. Just marketing to the paranoid.
Sad thing is they'll sell a million of these to unsuspecting parents and casual gamers, who trust the idiots at gamestop and ebgames.
yea, so even though the cooling solution is completly unnecessary, it won't cause the same issues as did the 360 version in regard to power usage. The 360 version obtained it's power after it had been converted to DC through the external 360 power brick. In the case of the PS3, the power supply is inside the system, so the cooling solution only feeds off the AC from your wall outlet, and passes through energy to the PS3 internal power supply. This is the same as if it was plugged into a power strip that your PS3 was also pluged into. So, there is no way it will cause undue stress to the internal PS3 power supply. So, if you feel that you need to provide more cooling to your PS3 (honestly, have you seen the leaf-blower of a cpu cooler inside this thing?), the Nyko's is a safe bet.
I've had the Intercooler on my 360 for about eight months, after my original system got the red ring of doom and I had to send it in. It's incorrect to say that Nyko hasn't updated the design of the intercooler to fix problems, since they have. The orignial version had its own dedicated on/off switch, and it was this switch that caused the additional current flow which blew out some systems. The design that I have eliminated this switch, so the only power required is the power for the three 1.4 watt fans within the cooler. Since installing it, my 360 runs far cooler, and I haven't had a single crash or problem. That power supply is a beast, I think it can handle a few 1.4 watt fans.
I bought this thinking it was a great idea....
THIS IS A TERRIBLE PRODUCT!
Not even after having it hooked up for more than 2 minutes, I repackaged it and got my money back.
What they fail to inform you is that while the PS3 is off, the fans stay on. The only way to turn off the fans is by hitting the main power switch in front. The problem with this? It removes a very nice feature - power on/off the console with your controller or remote control.
Also, with the fan speeds manually controlled, you would have to regularly check your PS3 to determine whether or not you need to increase the fan speeds.
What I have found, this device makes the PS3 require more physical attention than before.
The PS3 has built-in fans that seem to kick into high gear if your PS3 is getting too hot. If by chance your PS3 reaches dangerous tempatures, it will automatically shutdown - so why do we need this? WE DON'T.
FYI - Many rumors have been floating around that only those who have used the Intercoolers (especially with the pass-through power supplies) have a higher percentage of console failure rate.
STAY AWAY! YOU DON'T NEED THIS! IF YOU THINK YOU DO, THERE IS A BETTER PRODUCT OUT THERE.
My country is very hot, but I don´t like Niko products...I prefer the Pelican cooler with automatic control and don´t plug into ac plug...it´s dangerous...
Engadget and IGN are both under the false pretense that this thing draws power from the PS3's power supply, like 360's. Except one fact: the PS3's power supply is internal so Nyko has its own power supply from which it draws power. It simply shares the same power plug and cord.
My @home will freeze every once in a while, but i think it is from Dust & Cat hair getting sucked into my system. I am looking forward to the Smoke filter.
Another product to solve a problem that there isn't. I can't wait for them to release their PS3 ultrasonic monkey repellent.
do not need it, it is useless
Hello there, i keep my PS3 in a small cabinate and overheats very very easy. when i feel the back on the PS3 getting hot i just turn it on and it does the job its made for very well. if your PS3 gets extreamly hot just turn it on, crank the fan up to max and it cools the PS3 and air conditions my cabinate as well! what more could u ask for? lol
