Yes, the iPhone won't be lightening quick with data downloads, but Apple is so revolutionary that it would be long before other phone manufacturers start incorporating the same features into their own phones (of course they will make it 3G capable). These same manufactureres will be essentially biting off of someone else's ideas again. Will the iPhone be perfect or cheap? No b/c that's how Apple has always been throughout their existence. Will the iPhone be fun, useful, and multi-functional? You Bet! When Carlo talks about the next iPhone having 3G, that will probably ring true. But I, myself, am struggling with the idea of buying an iPhone now or waiting until reviews come out and/or a new updated version. But that is just the nature of technology and it doesn't matter which electronic device you get, the same process cycles through.

TechNutt

Comments on Debunk: sleep easy, the iPhone's still a quad-band worldphone

To many who travel extensively, the lack of a SIM card is a huge drawback. It means you're locked into a single service provider rather than being free to change SIM cards and use far less expensive and perhaps better services in the countries you visit. Got to have Quad band, of course, but the SIM card deficiency kills the iPhone for me. In fact, I don't think that most buyers are going to notice for two reasons:

1. The knowledgeable and cutting-edge folks that read and comment on these pages aren't the typical buyers for the iPhone. Most of the buyers will be in it for the overall user experience... the ability to see things on a big screen, the ability to expand and "pinch" the image on the screen to make a browser page more readable, the elegance of the Apple interface, etc. The vast majority of people won't use it for anything more than a phone, some pictures, text messaging (let's hold the virtual keyboard discussion for another time) and the very occasional browsing. For all of that, EDGE will be fine.

2. More importantly, however, the simple fact of the matter is that HSPDA (and EVDO, for that matter) simply haven't propagated throughout the carrier's entire system to make a difference. As I write this I'm in a relatively affluent suburb close to L.A., where the penetration rate for cell phones is about 100% - I honestly don't think there's anyone here above the age of 10 or below 85 that doesn't have at least one cell phone - and yet, Cingular, Sprint and Verizon haven't expanded their high-speed service here. Sure, I've got coverage all over town, but it's only in very small portions of the entire area that I travel in that the lovely little "3G" icon appears on my Cingular phone's screen.

And, going back to the initial point of this post, the likelihood of anyone actually needing a quad-band phone is pretty minimal. There's a small cadre of jet-hopping travelers that find them essential but most people simply won't care.

Readers of these posts strike me as being intelligent, passionate and - for the most part - articulate. What I don't think that readers are considering is what marketing folks like to call the "fat" part of the market. You don't need to satisfy the "fringes" with HSPDA, quad-band technology when 90+% of your market will want the product because it's cool, hip, has a giant screen, neat interface and makes a statement about their personality.

Just my 2 cents.

TheWirelessWizard

Comments on Debunk: sleep easy, the iPhone's still a quad-band worldphone

I couldn't resist, but I just had to comment . . .

Where have you been TechNutt?! Yes, it's true that when it comes to technology, often companies draw "inspiration" from each other, however like Darius stated, there is pretty much nothing new about the iPhone that hasn't already been done in one way or another.

- Touchscreen (been done before, check out Sony's m600 used in the movie Casino Royale for example)
- Widescreen (despite the fact that the iPhone's aspect ratio isn't exactly 16:9 making it not a true widescreen, many European/Asian tv phones have been having widescreen with true 16:9 aspect ratio for awhile now)
- Smartphone (despite the fact that you can't install 3rd party software on the iPhone, it's not a full smartphone and even if it was, there have been so many smartphones these past few years how could anyone not notice?!)
- Playing music and videos on your phone is nothing new. This has been done for like the past 2+ years or so.
- Having a 2 megapixel camera is nothing new. I walked into a CompUSA in late 2004/early 2005 and saw that they were selling a Nokia n90 which was a 2 megapixel camera. It's 2007 already and this is the best that Apple can come up with?! I'd say at least 3.2 megapixels for some good enough pictures that you've want to share (as well as print out) with your friends . . .
- Apple didn't invent multi-touch technology. It's already been done on some touchscreen PCs.
- Hard drive space (I've seen Sony, Samsung and Nokia boast a few phones around 4GB)

Everybody may like or dislike the iPhone for various reasons, but come on buddy, don't you think you're giving Apple a little too much credit here? It's definitely not "so innovative that other cell phone manufacturers will try to copy it" because it's all been done before.

P.S. I could care less about 3G because it's not like I'm constantly receiving a 3G signal where I'm located anyway.

Just dropping my 2 cents here.

db
