D this week: Jobs & Gates, Jobs, Hawkins announcing new Palm device
Just a happy reminder for Apple nerds and Treo fans, this week is the D conference down in San Diego, meaning you'll be able to look forward to some fun n' interesting new bits including:- Steve Jobs and Bill Gates appearing together in a joint interview Wednesday evening (no, far as we can tell they aren't expected to joint-announce anything)
- A second Jobs-only appearance earlier on Wednesday
- Jeff Hawkins, who will appear and introduce "a new category of mobile device" tomorrow morning [thanks, Jimmy]
Update: Our bad, it looks like it's Jobs who's appearing twice, not Gates. There's no official schedule, so we're kind of just going on passing comments made on Kara Swisher's blog right now.

Karim @ May 29th 2007 1:18PM
Begun, this phone war has.
steve s @ May 29th 2007 1:31PM
Uh, I think that is going to be a Jobs-only (not Gates-only) interview earlier on Wednesday... at least , according to the all things diglital site...

I'm thinking something along the lines of a Lifedrive with a keyboard and some EVDO worked in. Hopefully smaller and less sucky. I would also count on the device having GPS and wifi. The device might not be a Treo at all, as it may lack phone capacity.

Lets hope they don't drop a phone, trends have shown that non phone PDA sales are dropping. (I don't have a link handy, but I remember reading this on Engadget before)

"for Apple nerds and Treo fans"
What about Microsoft fans? There's two mentions of Gates in the bullets, plus the mention of Ballmer. So what about MS fans?
Ismael @ May 29th 2007 1:56PM
Exactly...

I am hoping palm releases something similar to the Nokia N800 internet Tablet
Brian @ May 29th 2007 2:03PM
Give me an N800 with a built in keyboard and I'll buy it.
Ian Jardine @ May 29th 2007 2:07PM
A competitor to the Nokia N800 would be excellent news. Especially if it included a contacts organiser functionality and Media + easily added GPS. Such a portable device would really work well.
Jeff @ May 29th 2007 2:14PM
may be offtopic here, but I'm close to buying an N800... I'm waiting to see what palm announces as I would like a real querty keyboard and maybe a more powerful processor...
I'm looking for something between a UMPC and my cellphone's browser, so far the n800 is the best fit.
As I see it, palm is uniquely positioned to compete well in the "internet tables" space both in device development and developer support for 3rd party apps.
Apple could have filled this void nicely but lack of 3G and 3rd party support in the iphone takes them out of the running. Can't blame them though, they're trying to make headway into a mass market and need to appeal to the common user... People who the nokia n800 appeals to are not really part of the "mass" market.

It would be interesting if Jobs and Gates where on stage together.. hope that gets on youtube!
Phone war.. bring it on!
Jeff @ May 29th 2007 2:56PM
One of the advantages when everyone thinks your pretty much dead... they don't really care what you have in the pipeline...

Dear God. MS would get punked. That's not fair. I think Gates will beg Jobs before the event not to take out the iPhone
Argot @ May 29th 2007 4:38PM
Dont worry. Apple still has to steal a few more details from existing phones before they can present their crappy LG-clone.
Begun the clone war has.

'I'm going to f***ing bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to f***ing kill Google.'
-Steve Ballmer
I think Schmidt better watch his a$$
