We couldn't see a go-to-market strategy that makes sense. But wait, there are a lot more DVD players than STBs, we just want to be a new DVD player for the internet age. And that's what we can be. Neither of them are currently positioned as IPTV-centric devices (for good reason - no one would spend $300+ on such a thing). The 360 is primarily a game machine and the AppleTV is primarily a tethered iPod. IPTV will take a while to become important to either device. The difference will continue to be that AppleTV is marketed as a media playback device, which is why people will buy it, even if other functions (such as games) are available. IPTV fits nicely with that as another type of media to play back.

Xbox 360 is primarily a gaming device, and it seems pretty unlikely that anyone would buy one who is not a gamer, no matter how much media functionality MS piles onto it. (I'm a gamer, and I like the 360, including its media functionality. But I would never reccommend it to my non-gamer friends who just wanted the media. It would confuse the heck out of them.)

So you may compare IPTV or other media feature sets, but just be congniscent that the devices are targeting different markets, and adding IPTV serves a different purpose for each company.

Adam

Comments on AT&T planning IPTV for Apple TV in 2008?

Re. Microsoft vs. Apple

Guys, Microsoft doesn't sell IPTV STBs. In current U-Verse deployments the Microsoft STB software goes on Motorola or Scientific Atlanta or other vendor's STBs. Microsoft gets money for the software. If AT&T deploys IPTV over Apple TV it would still use Microsoft software (perhaps written in Java?) and all of the Microsoft IPTV back-end servers and Microsoft software would still be used. AT&T pays for, manages, & has setup the direct feeds from the TV networks & then encodes each channel at the VHO (such as Kansas City) with h.264 compression (they also add in the local feeds too). Then they multicasts the channel feeds (on different IP's) over DWDM to each of the AT&T Central Offices which feeds FTTH & FTTN endusers. Microsoft does have thier software in the set top boxes to decode & uncompress the IP video streams which is customized for AT&T since they contracted with them to write software (to break out the h.264?? not VC1 - IP streams/feeds) for the settop boxes. I would imagine AT&T could contract whoever such as Apple TV to breakout the IP streams off AT&T's feed (network). After all the h.264 would line up with Quicktime which Apple has on the iPhone, iTunes, & Apple TV. I don't think the user interface will be like Microsoft's gui they have for the Uverse menu since everything else that Apple does (like it or not) they work hard to be the best & stay ahead of everyone else. This might get Microsoft & Apple competing for a better set top box experience or maybe just a different approach on how to get AT&T Uverse into peoples homes. Either way I think everyone will benefit.

sojourn

Comments on AT&T planning IPTV for Apple TV in 2008?

IPTV has been around for a while, without getting critical mass be it in the US or Europe, Asia is another story.
Until the bandwidth increases 5 fold and the price drops by half the adoption rates for any bandwidth hogging applications like IPTV or Internet Download services for Movies will at the most remain niche. If LightSpeed is not scaling up, AT&T can use this as a stop-gap arrangement to provide their customers with TV content provided over the internet, with the added allure of an Apple product. AT&T has a Blue Run internet video content site and the this joint offering should include that content too. Someone like a Verizon or the CableCos do not require this since their network will have the bandwidth to do all kinds of things and have a huge database of VOD content.

Sajith

Comments on AT&T planning IPTV for Apple TV in 2008?

Steve -
12:48pm - "Works fine off cable modem -- works even better on 100mbit fiber optic networks I hear people have.
