Our ears can only detect 'direction' of sound because we move our heads slightly from side to side, and can perceive the difference in signal. However, if the speakers are attached to your head (4 a side in this case), then the natural head motion won't work and you won't be able to establish direction that well.

Myrmidon

Comments on Turtle Beach's AK-R8 eight-speaker USB surround sound headphones

You have a good point. He kind of disproves Myrmidon's statements
"If I hear something behind me and to the right, I can turn my head..."
So, wait. if surround sound is only possible if you turn your head to pick up on the difference in wavelength, then how did you know the sound was behind and to the right in the first place.
Humans are amongst the few on earth that have the ability to distinguish sound location naturally, without moving ears or head.
Surround sound in a headphone is done by placing several tiny speakers inside, and activating each individually, similar to 7.1 surround. Its not trickery, or false promises, if a sound is behind an to the right, then the sound is put through the right headphone, rear most speakers.

Evan Labbe

Comments on Turtle Beach's AK-R8 eight-speaker USB surround sound headphones

@Adam Zaglaniczny: Convincing surround sound is possible through headphones, as you pointed out, but only with the right recording equipment. 5.1 surround sound delivers different sounds to each speaker, and because it assumes the speakers (not headphones) are positioned correctly around the listener these sounds are projected with disregard of idiosyncrasies in frequencies and delays that your brain requires to interpret them accurately with headphones.

I have 3 pairs of 5.1 headphones which fail miserably at providing good positional audio. I can't set up a 5.1 system due to my living situation so headphones are my only option. Needless to say, I have reached the conclusion that accurate or even acceptable 5.1 surround sound is only possible with external speakers, at least per my experience.

qbix

Comments on Turtle Beach's AK-R8 eight-speaker USB surround sound headphones

Sorry for the stupid question . . . They may look nice from a distance, but once you get within arm's length and closer, you start noticing the cheap plastic and thin cable.
