The higher the density of a platter, the better the read/write performance, in general. It's also cheaper to manufacture a single platter drive than a multi platter drive. So, I wouldn't be surprised if Seagate shifts as many of its drives as possible to 250gb platters, from 250gb ones up to 1 or 1.25tb.

cmonkey

Comments on Seagate crams 250GB on a single Barracuda platter

Maybe because it is (RTFA much?).

Jason Petersen

Comments on Seagate crams 250GB on a single Barracuda platter

So, how much storage is on the drive? 250GB?

-Baldwin

David

Comments on Seagate crams 250GB on a single Barracuda platter

wait what?

akijikan

Comments on Seagate crams 250GB on a single Barracuda platter

Competing 3.5” technologies, including the 1 TB drive from Hitachi GST, store 200 GB per platter and achieve an areal density of 144 Gb per square inch. I then asked if I could still purchase the OEM version (online @ newegg and the like), and he said no. Something fishy here...

holywood
