Dell's XPS m1330 and Inspiron laptops now on-line
After an initial appearance on Canada's site, Dell's new XPS m1330 and Inspiron laptops have broken free from the rumor mill. Available on-line now, the new 17-, 15-, and 14-inch Inspirons start at $769 while the XPS m1330 hottie will set you back at least $1,684 $1,299. Specs are in line with what we've already heard: LED-backlighting, slot-loading and Blu-ray optical, SSDs, big juicy 1,920 x 1,200 resolutions, GeForce Go 8600M GT graphics, 2x hard disk configurations and enough colors to make you doubt your manhood.
Update: Dell just updated the website (again) to reflect a starting price of $1,299 for the XPS m1330. That's more like it.
[Thanks, everybody who sent this in]

I want to know if Dell has more specific model numbers like acer do... for example in the travelmate 8210 series, there is a travelmate 8215.
Is 'm1330' the series number or the model number?
Because if they have an XPS m1337, I am SO getting it :P
interesting to note, is that 1330 is about $500USD cheaper than the american 1330 with similar specs.
i would really like to know why...
Why is the american base price more than Canada's. I though it should be the other way around
Darnit... the m1330 is about $400-500 more than I expected. Certainly rules that out. Unless college students get 40% off, it's back to the Asus z35f.
I think Dell is still updating their website? The price (US) just changed. If you click on customized it, the price starts at $1,299.
The Canadian version (see below) is still better though, it has a better processor (T5250 vs T7100), LED Display, and more RAM. :(
$1,430
From $37/month3
Tuxedo Black Casing with Microsatin Finish XPS M1330
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7100 (2MB cache/1.8GHz/800Mhz FSB)
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium Edition
Slim and Light White LED Display with VGA Webcam
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
120GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
8X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW Drive)
Slatter, why do you say that the T5250 processor is better than the T7100?
Fuzzy
I didn't mean to say T5250 is better than T7100. I can see why my comment was poorly worded and confusing. Yes, T7100 is better than T5250. The Canadian version has a T7100, which is better than the T5250 on the US version.
wow the specs on these laptops are awesome. prices are decent, and will hopefully come down mid fall when i decide to get one.
dont really understand why the 13" XPS is so much more than the Inspirons though. if someone knows, explain please.
Yeah, prices are different when you config. Im trying to config the 1330 and it went from $2100 to $1820 before and after. But watch for the ship date, the one I config'd has due date of 7/27, 'bout a month from now...
i also dont understand this "High Def" marketing for these new laptops. why advertise this at all?
and more importantly, after looking through the specs and all the options, looks like Dell F'd up royally. they pretty much forcing "glossy" displays as thats the majority option; i hate glossy displays.
just changed the prices on the 1330
I haven't wanted a laptop this much in a while. This thing looks damn nice.
I wonder - how much did Dell pay for such a lot of advertisements on Engadget?.. :)
Funny.
Engadget is actually losing money with ALL TWO of these Dell posts since, you know, it meant they had to take a break from posting Apple news...
Every gadget blog writes about Apple and iPhone ;)
And only Engadget writes so much about Dell, so... :)
What's up with the lack of gigabit ethernet??? So close to being a great laptop choice... but seriously this is a real cheap cost cut.
now the big problem for me is between a loaded Inspiron 1520 or a Asus G1S
damn you Dell and your pretty good laptops
I really hope the price I got it for sticks. I got the SSD upgrade for $300 and the Video and screen upgrade for $0 and the 3 year warranty took $200+ off the price as well. I even added accidental and came in around $2,200.
Now the prices are WAY different.
Unless I'm mistaken, no one has seemed to mention the new ubuntu inspiron they have available as well.
Not sure anyone else noticed...but if you go on Dell.com right now...not only are there new Notebooks but Desktops as well...and they have dropped the Dimension brand. The Desktops are "Inspiron Desktops" and have a brand new look. Nice one! I like them.
Wow, Dell has never looked so good. I just hope their phone support has improved as well.
The site says the 1330 comes with a Nvidia 8400Gs... not a 8600 GT
And also i don't see the options for blu-ray and SSD either... something i'm overlooking?
There is an option for 32 GB SSD for $600 now, but no mention of Blu-Ray.
i'm sure most of you know this already, but when youre configuring these new systems, make sure youre careful of which base model you start with. i started with the cheapest e1420 and configured it the same as the "best" e1420 and the "cheaper" one came out more than $200 more than the other one...just a heads up.
I love my Macs & OSX to death and wouldn't give them up for anything, even more so i hate Dell of all PC manufacturers with a passion and we all know windows is just a not so good O.S. but the prices are pretty amazing if they ran OSX i would be tempted , but why can't any other company do better minimalist elegant products like apple :(
Less is sometimes soo much more.
"Less is sometimes so much more."
Not when you charge so much more...
actually... with comparable specs... and the education discount i fail to see how the dell is a better deal in any way...
What color would you get??? Im leaning towards red.
Does anyone know when it will be released in the UK?
I emailed dell, you'll be able to get them all over Europe from thursday 28th.
What are the benefits of an SSD drive. Excuse my ignorance but I don't know much about the technology. Is it worth it??
ssd is just a hard drive made out of flash memory, so it doesnt have to spin up, it doesnt waste as much battery, it doesnt get hot. and so on. Does anyone know if the 85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell) sticks out? or is it the same size as the other batteries?
this video shows what the Dell XPS 1330 looks like and some of it's features, enjoy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCeHxyGuED0
Yup! It stickd=s out about .5-.7 inch Check out the CNET video Renee
oh and tell me how much it sucks that the education discount doesnt allow you to select what color you want, i believe it is red no matter what.
not true! you just have to physically click the "system color" button =)
500CDN to get the 32GB SSD... hmmm .. hmmmm
OK .. wtf is the screen resolution.. why are they f*cking hiding that information.
Thye arent, try looking in the area where you build your notebook, under 'Select my LCD and Camera'. It's 1280x800 if you're not so inclined.
All XPS M1330 LCD panels are 13.3 inch WideScreen (1280x800) Displays with TrueLife
hmmmm ... It seems Canadians are not given screen options like USA customers.. among other non-options.
Anyways, i spec'd out a US unit and the prices are not inexpensive, i was expecting much, much less monies than similarly equipped VIAO SZs.. but, they're not. There isnt even a Centrino line..
Right now the m1330 is looking pretty lackluster.
I'm actually kind of surprised. I was expecting to be able to configure a Dell Inspiron 1520 cheaper than an Asus G1S. But even with my education discount, it isn't that much cheaper really. I just configured a system similar to the G1S (2.2 GHz C2D, Vista Home Premium, 1680x1050 15.4" screen, 256MB 8600M GT, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, bluetooth, etc.) and it came to $1954 (that does include the DellCare Plus stuff though) after educational discount (full price of $2393). After the additional 12% off (thanks to buying a system bundled with 3 year service), the final price was $1719, or $1805 for me after taxes.
Certainly not bad by any means, but it's not really amazingly cheaper to me than the other similarly spec'd laptops I was looking at; Asus G1S (which is $1999 without any sort of educational discount) and the base model MBP (which only has a knock against it compared to the Inspiron because of 128MB of VRAM instead of 256). Even factoring in paying for AppleCare, the MBP is only a couple hundred more (and this is factoring in all the Dell discounts and such), which is not as wide a gap as I was expecting.
I was just thinking that the Dell would be a lot cheaper than the Asus G1S or MBP.
Does anyone know when they'll be available in Europe (specifically Ireland)?
I just pimped out a m1330 for $2,300 and sold my MacBook, w00t!
Personally I don't like how this laptop looks.
On top of that, I don't think how your computer works is important in the least. Maybe it's just me, but my computer isn't a fashion statement, it's a workstation. It's function is solely to compute and so forth, and as such I have no need for shiny surfaces , fancy tapers and such.
How do you get the educational discount? I'm a student as well but I'm not sure how you go about getting it. Thanks!
hmm, lack of gigabit ethernet might be deal breaker. Also there's no dial-up modem in it so you need to carry a usb modem if you occasionally fax from your laptop. Other than that, I hope it has a digital audio out. I personally don't care about blu-ray or hd-dvd drive but for some, that might be a deal breaker too.
Finally, if someone lends me $1900 I'm gonna buy one right away :)
I see them toteing HD displays and blue ray, but I see no options for either! Are they standard? (Inspiron 1521)
Also, can someone clarify that the 1520 with Core 2 duo is indeed that much better than the 1521 with the Turion? (for the increase in price)
What the deal with the Screen options. Is LED White worth an $150 premium and the sacrifice of a 2Mega Pixel Camera for a crappy VGA one??
Standard: 13.3" UltraSharpTM WXGA display with TrueLifeTM (available with 2.0MP camera);
Or
Optional: LED - backlit 13.3" UltraSharpTM WXGA display with TrueLifeTM (available with 0.3 MP camera)
