I had Treo, now have WM6 TyTn. Treo was a nice device, but had its problems (Palm OS is fantastic, very light and useful - but completely outdated now). Windows Mobile is just a fucking disaster (as most MSFT crapware is) - slow, still buggy, almost no UI improvements. Also I've tried Nokia E70 - and that was horrible, you press "call" button, you wait 3 (!) seconds, it starts calling.
I don't remember Apple advertising it as smartfone. They quite clearly position it as phone-ipod-internet device, which is not smartfone. In fact, it's you, "tech blog" (whatever that is) writers hyped it up as a smartfone.
And from the flicks I've seen, that built-in Safari thing seems waaay better than piece-of-shit Pocket IE.
Modern smartphones' UI sucks big time, maybe Apple at least will teach them a lesson with better one.
iPod part sucks horribly though - I don't feel like buying adapter (9$, yes, but you will lose it next day, as it happens to adapters) to plug my headphones into something which is advertised as "best iPod". How it's best when you event cannot plug in proper headphones?
I work on Macs and like them (was 8 or so years on Windows/Linux before). But I'm not going to buy me iPhone (anyway, it's N/A in Europe :)). Maybe 2nd generation, when they sort things out and produce unlocked version.
Buy one for yourself, cheapo. Who gives a fig about wallchargers. The iPhone battery is rumored to run for month while playing videos, music and talking all at once from one charging. When the battery runs down, throw it away and get another iPhone. Think of it as a disposable iPhone. That's the way to keep the economy flowing.
If anyone missed, PC World is running a professional version of Engadget's "we're close to being almost able to prepare to upload some pictures!" entry. :)
Wow, amongst all the dumbass posters here today, and the preceding days bashing the iPhone, or insulting Apple fans, you win the prize for biggest moron. Good for you, moron.
first of all, apple and Jobs and many reviewers (from the US of course) have strongly said and advertised the iPhone as a smartphone. Which it's not.
second, about apples, yep, they are cool.. the lack of applications and the only recent introduction of a right clicking mouse were turn-offs. it's basically just posix with a sleek interface and cool hardware design. also true is the fact that all models before intel had some stupid bottlenecks in there...
to talk about phones again... winmo is dreadful.. i had 2 htc's including the universal, and windows isn't even ready to run on a vga screen, everything remains huge and fills the screen. so i've become a s60 faithful...
i now have and enjoy an E70. that speed problem was indeed a major source of nasty words, but it got fast after some firmware upgrades... now i'm extremely content with it, love the keyboard, and will maybe in 6 months or a year change it for whatever will be cool... maybe even the iPhone 2.0
but this one, this is really the most hyped but over-stated electronics device ever. not bad, but not good either..
just read its manual... it features info about what to do when it crashes/freezes... very cool.. for a non-smartphone to crash and freeze... come on, you're not microsoft!!..
It crashes and freezes when you try to run (oh, no!) these infidel 3rd-party softwares! :-)
But seriously - welcome to Apple's QA Club! You never buy 1st-gen hardware from Apple - it is usually fucked up and sorted only in second or third revision.
Everyone loves beta-testers, who pay for being a tester, look at video games industry for example.
funny that you mentioned games.. i worked as a beta-tester for ubisoft... they paid me to test games, they even took me to chicago, amsterdam and paris...
and apple.. hehe i know that all too well, though I'm from europe too...
Yep, I know it runs AJAXy pages and stuff, which is THE PLATFORM for iPhone apps (not a fan of this idea).
Just remembered The Steve talking about 3rd-party apps taking down entire GSM network (yeah, right) - working in telecom, this made me laugh.
As for games - yes, there are paid beta-testers of course, but most publishers just print RC-level versions of games and rush them to market these days. And then patch away (and abandon support after couple of patches).

as teh Jobs said, '3rd party applications run in sadnboxed mode in safari's engine' ... that means they can't save stuff to the phone and can't access any hardware resource, right?...
i'd really love to see a guitar tuner or a sound monitoring program or a photo editor that can save...
If I remember correctly, didn't the FCC (FTC?) recently pass a law requiring all GSM providers to provide unlock codes for handsets upon the owners request?
Traditionally a provider offers a handset at a subsidized price, if you sign up for the service at the time of purchase. Apple/ATT are not offering a subsidy on the iPhone.
In theory, couldn't you purchase an iPhone, contact ATT for the legally required unlock code, unlock it, then use it on any other GSM network? (T-Mobile, International GSM carriers, etc...)
Anybody else have more information regarding this law/statute of required unlock codes?
y are u complaining im in jamaica, at least ur attached to the US, it may be another 3yr before we see a usable iphone.. well atleast we have the curve to play with for a while
Seriously you do not WANT the Indians buying the iPhone yet.
If the 0.5% of the Indian population you mentioned gets excited about these iPhones the widget makers and other software toolmakers that are making a living in the US will be driven jobless.
BTW, I thought the 0.5% of the Indians do LIVE in the Bay Area where many work at Apple. They are getting their iPhones for FREE !
anybody notice how the battery went down by like 50% during the photo shoot? The Google maps screen shows 100% battery and then during the activation pics it's almost 50%.
hey chris, dude so sorry you dont know maths or for that matter know how to use the internet properly but as sid pointed out 0.5 % of Indian population of 1.12 billion would be 6 million but correct me if i am wrong isnt cupertino's population 50,546(2000). wow that will mean each person producing 1187 babies in 7 years and everyone buying an iphone. sure wish steve was reading this maybe the next gen ipod will be in India first.

I went to the ATT store and bought an iphone and was told if i returned it within 14 days and open the plastic bag (they actually had a peel and seel plastic bag they put the iphone into) i would be charged a 10% restocking fee and 25% if i opened the box. I then went to apple store in the same mall and was told there was no restocking fee even if bring it back with the box open and procceded to buy 2 more. Sounds like there of to great relationship.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
You should change your name to, "Hey I think I'll say this for the millionth f'ing time!"
But I only said it once :o
Hey, take it easy.

Can you take a few more dozen pictures of the wall charger, please?

Great sense of humor you got there, Yerpappy. *rolls eyes*
Amazing, it looks exactly the same as it did in the zillions of other pictures! Except with more fingerprints.
Just remember that all these people have sweaty fingers because they're so nervous and excited about touching their dream device.
Can we get that photo of it compared to other phones maybe a psp, and ipod anything?1?
they've already flooded ebay! some fool's willing to pay over $3000 for one!

> 10% of bay area population is Indians. So, in effect, a bunch of Indians are going to be buying this phone.
Anyone want to buy?

Oooh! New stuff!
Instead of a lame photoshoot of the damn box, please just stick a t-mobile sim in it and tell us just how locked it really is.
bro got one here in aventura mall. Line was about 300 people. This thing is selling like hot cakes.

looks good from the first look, but the functionality will be the big question mark, especially with the batterylife and the keyboard.
sorry double post!
