The new iTunes doesn't have the ability to make your own ring tones, it has buttons left over from a dev build that USED to have that feature.

this isnt actually a ringtone button, but an alarm button.
for example, i have 1 mp3 on my phone (just to see how it worked), i
canNOT set it as my ringtone, however, i can set it as an alarm.so

If they don't let users use regular music as ringtones, but instead made you have to pay for their own implementation of it I wouldn't exactly be surprised - I mean, isn't that the _real_ reason they wont let "proper" (access to os & kernel etc) third party apps on this thing:-

if they did, eventually (if not immediately) someone would build/port over, say, a media player that would have more functionality than whatever would come as standard on the phone for instance VLC player or something and then people would be able to play more that what apple lets them (eg MKV's, Divx, soft subs etc - sans conversion to MP4) and if one could do that "natively" then why [theoretically] would someone buy movies & TV shows from itunes?..........

(...."risk bringing down the network" huh?).

Realistically though, from their point of view I can see why they decided to play it out this way as they need to sustain revenue to keep their worker's paid, but from a consumer perspective it does disappoint - what good is a desktop OS on a phone if you can use it like a desktop OS?

The consumer in me can only hope that if the rumours of OS X based ipods be true, they are a little more lenient with their lock-down, at which point the cynic in me slaps him and asks if he genuinely believes that.
