Take a look at their site and see how they're doing at updating their PDA products (Nav4,5, &6). They're not even supporting them. They dropped supporting the LifeDrive and all Non-Treo PDAs altogether, they aren't supporting Windows Mobile 6. I have a LifeDrive with a TomTom Navigator 5 that is non-upgradeable at this point. I am stuck with maps from 2 years ago with no way of updating them. I suppose the hardware could be used with a laptop or something, but the bottom line is TomTom is like Palm itself: a company that will leave customers in the lurch when the next technology comes along. Even Microsoft supports its products for a number of years past their prime so customers can get some use of a given item prior to replacing it with the latest. I have tried to contact TomTom's customer service and they give short glib responses like "We don't support Palm's LifeDrive any longer, you can try Navigator 6 at your risk" (imagine the phony euro-trash accent staring down their nose at the stupid American and you get the picture).

I generally try to look for the positive, but I expect support and upgrades for at least a few years - I've had my TomTom Navigator 5 for less than 1 year. Unbelievable. Run, don't hide from this company.

007baf

Comments on The Engadget Interview: Jocelyn Vigreux, President of TomTom USA

I really like the safety feature they put on the GO 720. I even have the Dell Axim PDA that I've connected via BT to TomTom's Wireless Bluetooth GPS Receiver. All the TomTom products we own work GREAT. We remain very impressed. Last summer we spent 2 months backpacking through Europe and used the Axim PDA+TomTom BT GPS Receiver+Western Europe Maps. It was a fantastic mobile GPS unit that never failed to drive and then walk us to the front door of each destination. I have interacted with TomTom's customer service and I'm very impressed with the service. I am not affiliated with TomTom in any way. I'm just a satisfied customer. By the way, I do recommend the Axim PDA if you want a convenient way to take TomTom mobile.

Stephan in San Jose, CA

Comments on The Engadget Interview: Jocelyn Vigreux, President of TomTom USA

TomTom may indeed be a European (Dutch) company, but that is a definite plus when traveling in Europe, as their maps are superior. I just got back from 3 weeks in Italy, and TomTom (One) was indispensable, even in Venice where it works on foot. It was not perfect, but was SO much better than fooling with maps and reading signs. Going from Orvieto to Ostia Lido through all the messed-up construction around Roma at night was a piece of cake with TomTom. Getting into our out of towns is a pleasure now- you can watch the scenery rather than straining to see signs/read maps. It also quickly re-routes when I inadvertantly take a wrong turn. I'll NEVER drive in Europe again without my TomTom. They do need to expand into the former Yugoslavia, however. I could have really used it over there.

Michael Moore
