I still use the original Xbox and was about to jump in to this generation with the 360 as it has most of the games I like. I might wait awhile now and see if this get corrected with the 65nm Revision. As far as extending the warranty to 3 years go, this is an awesome move on their part. Also awesome is that they are going to refund any repair charges that people might have already paid. I applaud Microsoft for doing this, but it is still frustrating for those of us who were left up shit creek without a paddle when they only had their ridiculous 90 warranty.

well, it could go either one of two ways 1) either its the hyundai/honda of the market (don't be so surprised that i said hyundai) and its built so well that people within the company are confident there are not going to be any problems w/in that warranty period. or 2) theres really just so many damn problems w/ the console, that anything less than that for a warranty, and people would feel kinda sketchy about buying their product. in this case, definitely #2...

I don't think the 360 was even part of the advertising scheme for the movie, let alone in it. The 360 hasn't even been out 3 years, and it definitely hasn't had a 100% failure rate, otherwise they would've long since been off shelves. And worst Consumer Electronics product ever? Far from it lol. And people who's 360s died after the 90-day warranty expired were covered when the changed it to a one-year warranty and made it retroactive, so long as they didn't open their 360 (can't blame MS for telling you not to open it, they don't want you messing around in there)

I think you're just an extreme MS hater. Personally, I'm not a fan of MS. I don't particularly like Windows. But I like the 360. True, it's had its share of problems, and it's taken them probably a bit too long to admit it. But like other people have said, better late than never. They've been putting better heatsinks and cooling components in the new 360s, and they still have a 3 year retroactive warranty now. So quit hating. Besides, it's doing better than the PS3 =P

This is great news for any 360 owner, and that means I'm now covered till the end of 2008. Result (and I've got a launch machine)!

Sucks for Microsoft to have to pony up $1Bn, but hey, if they hadn't had the thing so shoddily put together they might not be in this fix. And at least they're taking efforts to improve the reliability of it too.

At $1billion cost of warranty replacement that comes close to 2.5 million consoles that will need to be replaced over the next 3 years. Thats close to a healty 25% of sold units. Most likely it will end up costing Microsoft more. There goes any chance of the Xbox division of turning a profit anytime soon.

This move was probably neccesitated by the EU which was probably going to issue a mandatory recall. News like this would kill the system so Microsoft extended the warranty to try to get away from a recall. Even so I expect a system to last longer than three years, what happens when it breaks after that point. Extending a warranty is not a fix to a major manufacturing problem.

The reason why electronics warranties are 90 days to one year is because if there is a manufacturing defect in an electronic component it will fail within the first 30-60 days 90% of the time. If you have a 3 year warranty it means the company is fairly certain they won't have to replace the product. If they thought 25-30% were going to die there would never be a 3 year warranty on it. Most of the failing 360's all happenned within a year of purchase and the extension of the warranty is just a band aid. It won't prevent failures and in this case Microsoft is almost tellign you your box is going to fail within three years but at least you can get a replacement.

It reminds me of people who kept on buying 1980's Porches. How many mile you got on that thing? 30,000 but I've had to replace the head gasket 3 times already but its a great car, wanna go for a ride.]]>Jul 5th 2007 6:22PM
