Price cuts don't usually come when the company isn't making a profit off the system(in Sony's case), but the 360 has been profitable for quite a while now, there's no reason MS shouldn't look to boost sales with a price cut, which in the end will benefit MS more than by keeping the current price point, with the profits from games and accesories likely exceeding the profit on the console it's self.(I myself would buy an extra game with the money saved, and others who couldn't afford a 360 before, now can).

As for not outselling the wii ever... don't make me laugh. In enough time people will realize that the Wii only has about 3 games, and i doubt the wave of popularity that is driving the wii's sales can last until the games coming at the end of the year. As a wii owner, thats the opportunity i'm looking forward to, to buy myself a 3rd game for it finally.

Grant

Comments on Microsoft has Xbox 360 price cuts in the works as well?

Grant: Sure the Wii only has ~3 games right now (I actually own 4, but one I regret and two were bundled with the system), but you forget the staggering statistic that "casual" console owners only *ever* buy something like 5 games on average over the life of the console. I think I read that on Joystiq; I'm not 100% sure of the number but I remember thinking to myself at the time that it was amazingly low. Sony *needs* to sell 5-10 games per PS3 on average just to break even, while Nintendo's strategy (sell console at a profit, release a smaller number of games) works even if people treat the Wii + Wii Sports package like a modern-day Pong console, where they never even change the disc in the slot. Even if the average lifetime attach rate for the Wii never breaks 4 games, Nintendo is still making a boatload on hardware and accessories alone.

James

Comments on Microsoft has Xbox 360 price cuts in the works as well?

Hopefully they drop the price of the extra hard drives too.

Matthew Stenz

Comments on Microsoft has Xbox 360 price cuts in the works as well?

I'm still expecting that within the next year MS will come out and say "Yeah, that whole no hard drive idea was a bad idea" and then drop the price on the HD to $40.

Eric

Comments on Microsoft has Xbox 360 price cuts in the works as well?

Wow i loe it when the comsumer gets all the benefit. Core at $250 to directly compete with the Wii makes sense, and a $50 hit on the Premium would be necessary to make it worthwhile (same price as a HDD upgrade to Core). I then noticed that Best Buy online had the same price so I also printed that one. I then did a little experiment. I went to my nearest Best Buy, Natick, MA, and showed the CC add to the Customer Service rep there. They said that couldn't be true as the lowest they could sell was $599.99. So what I did next, and you guessed it, I pulled out the Best Buy print out for the guy - TOUCHE! Cue in cash register catching sound byte. Of course, I'm probably wishing for too much, but I remember reading that the Elite was only a limited time deal and would eventually drop to become the de facto Premium. I think that Microsoft's double dipping us. It offered a new SKU for two reasons...one was to test to see whether a third tier of hardware would sell (it will) and the other was to provide a sort of downstream sales pipeline for aging inventory as the technology and hardware mature. The 360 still has 3-4 years in it as a top-tier piece of equipment before they come out with a next-gen console and it could continue with strong sales if they keep refreshing the SKU's throughout that period.

Microsoft has already injected Media Center into Vista to get themselves into the living room. The 360 was a further effort to continue that trend. I suspect our next-generation Microsoft gaming console will have CableCARD support and will seek to be an all-in-one device. Media Center Extender, Gaming Console, Set-Top-Box.

chaosrain

Comments on Microsoft has Xbox 360 price cuts in the works as well?

The current 360 will already be a STB in a few months for those that have the AT&T and Verizon IPTV services.

Ian

Comments on Microsoft has Xbox 360 price cuts in the works as well?

Dean Takahashi at the San Jose Mercury News is reporting revamped Xbox360s with smaller, cooler chips by this Fall. Macs blow ass. That ends that issue...

No, it depends on what you purchase. In most cases, it puts the 360 in a better light. Besides, wireless fidelity sucks for online gaming, and is and always will and should be a last resort. Otherwise, it is totally useless, therefore, nearly all Xbox users wouldn't use it even if it was built in. Why do I say this? Because most people's routers are right beside their television, meaning that WiFi is simply stupid.

Only true 1080p system on the market? Uh, Xbox 360 Elite? That is 1080p. There is no need for 50GB discs for games OR movies.

Component connection? Really? Its actually USB, meaning you don't necessarily have to use it for your Xbox; you can also use it on your PC.
