Besides, I think most of the people have their routers sitting at the very top of their desks, or some high shelf. I haven't seen many people having their routers sitting right in front of their monitors.
I've seen some. But, if we're using the wireless feature of the router, we tend to put it on the highest available place we can find.

On another note I'm in desperate need for a new router. I just sent back another one from Amazon.com since it didn't work, and was going to go to Apple's Airport Extreme. Steve...there is a really good router available now, the D-Link DIR-655. I would check it out. It's got tons of features and is one of the top 3 consumer routers in the amount of data it can push through. I'd say it's on par with or better than the Airport Extreme, unless you wanted the Print Server/NAS capabilities of the Airport. Although if you are using Macs, I would stick with the Airport. I haven't tried this myself, but apparently D-Links can cause some headaches. The N1 did not support (lazy)WDS, and it had less range than the WRT did! (Before and after I changed the power with ddwrt) The configuration was extremely basic. The last belkin product I bought, a wireless G unit, was extremely powerful with tons of options (WDS, AP/Bridge/Mac->IP DHCP filters etc).

How does this model compare? It is still over simplified with no way to get to advanced features? And, how is its range with wireless G equipment? This is not the first router with display. Early this month Dlink made an announcement about their draft 11n 2.0 DIR-660 router with OLED display. http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=625

If we compare the Belkin Vision router and DIR-660, the Belkin casing,design looks better.Nice work! But I wonder how the actual performance of Belkin router is going to be..

The DIR-660 claims all the features similar to DIR-655. If I assume DIR-660 is DIR-655 with OLED in addition,my guess would be that the performance of DIR-660 should be very good.

The above link in Tom's Hardware compares the performance of different routers in the market today and DIR-655 tops the list for routing performance, P2P simultaneous connections and feature list.

My advise would be to wait for Tom's Hardware to review and rate the Belkin N1 vision router before spending 199$..

Router is not about looks since once it is configured properly, you hardly have to touch it and notice it. It is all about routing performance, automated QoS, wirelss performance and stability. Good looks is a bonus :-)

I own a DIR-655 which is 11n 2.0 draft, Works with Vista!, automatic QoS and has very good coverage for my home + GigE. All this for just $115! I won't be changing my router box in a long time and since I installed it, I never had to reset it even once!!

I always thought that the best networking gadgets would be from Linksys but I am impressed with Dlink products these days! Belkin is coming up with very unique designs for routers which is very creative. But the wireless performance is not very stable and rather pricy.
