I believe YOU are ignorant for saying that playstation's sales (at 3rd place)don't influence the blu ray's success. You are bringing the console wars into this HD disc discussion. Yes, the small percentage of people that actually buy blu-ray disc for the PS3 are doing so because there aren't any fucking decent games for the system. My idiot friend who purchased one played motorstorm, got bored of it and then tried to buy other games. Then he quickly realized there wasn't anything else to play! He was going to get VF5 but he is now going to wait to buy it for his 360 because it has live support. So instead of buying games he bought some blu-rays discs to watch to justify the money he spent on it. Now when the PS3 does eventually get decent games during the next quarter then he will be back to playing games and not buying fucking blu-ray discs...

chathampax

Comments on HD DVD touts sales growth over Blu-ray's decline

can both formats co-exsist?? they are both nice formats sony has IMO put more into the things that matter over what toshiba has done..if or when HD-dvd fails it's only because of the lack of a push from toshiba..sony has blu-ray burners already on the market and since they bought out some movies studios..they have a good amount of films to keep by their side....i love HD formats...i'm just thinking that this war should have been waged 3 years ago. with HD on demand and my cable company adding more channels every month, i'm just really happy with digital distributions steps more than HD stand alone players. Besides it's really not a "fair" war now is it, if "ALL" movies were avaliable for both formats, then it would be a fair battle. As it stands now sony has just too much on it's side to lose. What i really don't understand in all this HD vs. Blu-ray debate is why a movies studio wouldn't allow it's movies to be on both formats i mean whether you like one format or the other it's money to be made if your a studio what does it really hurt to have movies on "both" formats??Seems like studios are lossing money in areas that they could be making it.

Doc

Comments on HD DVD touts sales growth over Blu-ray's decline

First off, Blu-ray IS the better format, many think only the available space is the Difference but as well as holding more, the bandwidth of the streams for both Audio and Video is better and more "future Proof" for Blu-ray.

The peak A/V mux rate for HD DVD is 30Mb/s.

The peak A/V mux rate for Blu-ray is 48Mb/s(40Mb/s for video).

(pirating spam is expected, it seems to be the only downside people come up with for Blu-ray)

Though it wasn't really ready and had to rush to market, the PS3 will be better than the XBOX360.

I'll use Unreal tournament 3 as an example. On the PS3 you pay nothing for add-ons and you can also use Mods on the PS3 version, something you can't do with the XBOX360 and the things you can do, you'll be paying for from the Marketplace.

I use my PS3 mostly for movies, since I have a gaming PC that does alot more. I do own both the XBOX360 and the PS3, and like many am well aware that though the 360 can be used to watch movies the fans are like a jet engine compared to the PS3.

So, feel free to dismiss the PS3, but it's already history that it has turned the tide on this format war and it IS making a Huge difference.

As time moves forward and different companies that have been dialing in their Software development kits for the PS3 improve you will only see more, and better games coming out.

It's no mystery to techies why the 360 is easy to code for..its so similar to a PC, whereas the PS3 has the Cell processor which is like Alien tech compared to whats been out to create apps on a mass level in the last few years.

So yes, it's easy to insult the PS3 NOW, but Time is not on HD DVD or the 360s side in this case.

Keep in mind also, the reason the 360 was adopted at such high levels in the first year it was released is beacause MS totally dropped support for the old XBOX, mush like they do on Windows software.

Through August there are 12+ new releases for the PS2, and NONE for the XBOX.

XBOX customer "I need to uprade to a 360"

PS2 customer "Which Game should I buy this month?"

Mr_Fizzlepop

Comments on HD DVD touts sales growth over Blu-ray's decline

The PS3 is not exactly a Blu-ray Player, is a game system that play Blue-rays.

Eligio J Rosa

Comments on HD DVD touts sales growth over Blu-ray's decline

Those are promising sales figures for Toshiba. 80k players sold in 3 months isn't too shabby. I think this data reinforces the notion that price is king. The BR team better get them prices to the $300 or lower range by Christmas or face losing significant ground in the stand alone player market.

There's a reported 4:1 attach rate advantage for HD-DVD due to most PS3 owners not buying BR movies. 80k x 4 = 320k BD players needed in the same period of time. PS3 was selling about 80k/mon or 240k units in that same period. Looks like HD-DVD made headway in stand-alone market penetration.

People must not forget that game consoles have a life cycle. They sell like mad when they are released and then decline until a price drop or highly anticipated title causes a sales spike. This means that the PS3 effect is HUGE at the get-go, but will become less important as time passes. The attach rate for PS3's just accelerates this degradation of importance.

HDMike

Comments on HD DVD touts sales growth over Blu-ray's decline

I just think thet everything takes time....But the lead in the format war is on bluray side. Only one studio is fully behind the hddvd, and independant studios ( wich choose it for the price tag of production ....wich will change since chinese factories found a way to produce BR 30% cheaper ). The problem is what will drives sales like crazy, like the dvd did : The bourne identity or pirates of caribean ? or even more relevant Happy feet, or NEMO ?

The buying process is drived by the mass market and they love blog busters ( and in this domain, bluray is packed full of it...and exclusively for most ), and by the kids . Just look at amazon, and you will understand this point...Go to both format, click Kids and family, and compare... The bluray amount of mass appealing movies for family and kids crush the hd-dvd. And just imagine what will happend after the bluray tour of disney...presenting all those beautifull pixar billion seller movies to those tender eyes... :
" mom i want NEMO now "
" but we have a HDDVD..."
" I dont care this...i want NEMO "

This will be an amazing weight on BR side...

If you had Apple, wich also appeal to mass market, much more than computer freeks...you got a winner.

They are slower than HDdvd to come with price drops and offers, but what they will offer soon ( when apple and disney will wake up ) is a killer machine...

And universal will hardly compete, and will probably have to align.

I am no fanboy, and will not plan to buy neither formats, but i am witnessing everything from asia, and here, the hddvd is almost non existant in the stores...except HMV. Even toshiba is not selling HD players yet, while sony and samsung are feeding people with High def BR on giant screens ( china, thailand and malaysia at least )

The only REAL strong point on the hddvd side is THE PRICE...and this is a major factor to sell hardware...so wait and see.

Benzitor

Comments on HD DVD touts sales growth over Blu-ray's decline

Do you think a 4 or 5 year old cares if Nemo is in 1080 or is upconverted...no they don't...and Disney will sell on HD DVD once so many HD DVD's are in homes that they can't ignore the profit.

Money talks...the savings for me...the profits for the studios.

Mike

Comments on HD DVD touts sales growth over Blu-ray's decline

I dont think they care a vhs or a dvd neither...but they still sold more dvds, even if parents had vhs tape players at home....how?
