HDD is much better than mini-dv, transferring videos for editing takes no time with HDD and they use these hard drives in iPods and they don't get destroyed when dropped, so the chance of losing your data is very low. You would have to insane to put up with the inconvenience and much longer capture times associated with mini-dv
