They use electricity which for now is produced by burning coal. You can't get something from nothing, and I think that's what people are missing. Electric is awesome if you're running some kind of solar/wind technology. But until we have the infrastructure to collect, and distribute that kind of energy you're not going to get away from your "carbon foot print". Not saying we shouldn't try to do that, but let's do it honestly, and without the buzzwords.

fred

Comments on Think hoping to deliver web-enabled electric car

Those buzz words just wreak of failure don't they?

Without those words, I'd think it was a legitimate business plan.

The only way it's actually neutral is if you're running enough solar to cover the (environmental) cost of making the car and the solar panels. Somehow I doubt that.

I don't doubt that it's a step in the right direction though. Power plants are FAR more efficient than cars, and it's worth it to implement each and every little bit of improvement, no matter the cost, because 1% of 10's of millions of dollars is hundreds of thousands of dollars (per year).

andy

Comments on Think hoping to deliver web-enabled electric car

Not everywhere burns coal for power, e.g. in the EU a lot of electricity comes from nuclear power stations so they are carbon neutral...if you ignore the carbon produced during manufacture.

Matt

Comments on Think hoping to deliver web-enabled electric car

I Think it's important to get a few facts right. From what I've read the THINK is a properly homologated car, with air bags, crumple zones, abs and all that stuff. Plus it has a vastly superior rang to Riva and the others plus it can go at Highway speeds.
A for the carbon tuff. An electric car is 88% efficient as compared to a petrol car which is only 28% efficient and yes we are just moving the carbon from the exhausts of cars to power stations but if it's all in one place then there is a much better chance of us to control it ( with carbon scrubbers and such)
I really want EV's to have a fare fight, and if we get behind little cars like think then maybe the big car companies will think about changing the way they make cars!

James Morris

Comments on Think hoping to deliver web-enabled electric car

iagree!

required

Comments on Think hoping to deliver web-enabled electric car

I agree as well. Little cars are great, until you have to move some stuff. And then what? You pay somebody to drive their truck around and pollute for you? You're never going to sell this idea to Americans until you can start giving the electric car the same kind of capabilities as a gas powered car. Let this turn into a "Americans are lazy, and fat, and stupid" argument if it must but those are the facts. I think that : 1) he is underestimating the extent to which people will pay extra to go green. The VOLT in no way has to match the price od an equivalent ICE to be successfully marketed. 2) If you lease a battery, this only makes sense if the battery will basically outlast the car,
or you want to amortize the costs over a longer period. But that would be better done by mortgaging the batteries over 15 years (their lifespan) and the rest of the car over 5 years.
All of this simply highlights what is painfully obvious to electric
propulsion proponents - all-electrics aren't economically viable as yet - the plug-in is the only practical way to offload enormous amounts of oil over to electricity. I wish every Tom, Dick and Harry would stop
saving the world by announcing some new crappy and impractical all-electric. Most of these cars are garbage and of poor quality.

Kent Beuchert
