For instance, I needed a mac to do one thing: run Digital Performer. I didn't have any place for an iMac, and I didn't want to spend $1500+ on a full tower. The specs even on the *original* mac mini were sufficient, so I picked up one for $600 and it's worked like a dream since.

Yeah, "should". The reality is that hooking a mac up to a TV via DVI isn't a pleasant experience.
