Apple's new iMac
Who could've seen this one coming? Apple surprised no one this morning with brand new iMacs. Built from aluminum and glass, the new all-in-one desktops feature a complete, slimmer redesign and will come in two sizes: 20-inch and 24-inch. There's the usual compliment of ports like USB 2.0, Firewire 400 / 800, a slot loading SuperDrive, iSight camera and so forth. The new look features a glossy display to match the majority of Apple's consumer lineup, and new keyboards are indeed coming along for the ride -- in an extended wired version as well as a mini wire free model, running the Bluetooth 2.0 spec. Under the hood Apple has up to a 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme processor, ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics, up to 1TB of storage, 802.11n and Bluetooth 2.0, with 8x SuperDrives and 1GB of RAM standard across the board. Prices start at $1,199 for the 20-inch, $1,499 for a processor and graphics bump, $1,799 for the 24-incher and $2,299 for Core 2 Extreme. The full rundown of Apple's stock models is after the break.
Update: Corrected the 2.8GHz Core 2 Extreme spec, and added a fourth configuration to the rundown.

ryan @ Aug 7th 2007 1:12PM
Nice. Dang that's thin.
Thomas M. @ Aug 7th 2007 8:46PM
I need a new one. My stupid cousin stole mine and snuck it into jail inserted in his rectum.
fischju @ Aug 7th 2007 1:43PM
But does it play Doom?
Darnell @ Aug 8th 2007 1:59AM
So thin in fact, why would I even think of buying a laptop when I could carry this thing around. Lol.
DR PEPPER @ Aug 7th 2007 2:31PM
Yes
ssuk @ Aug 7th 2007 3:03PM
In before "Macs dont play games" etc etc
Dinraj @ Aug 7th 2007 6:55PM
It isnt that thin as it really looks for the PR Pictures. If you see the engadget pics you'd see its a bezeled outer, like an ol' CRT Television. But anyways, nice job there apple ;)
tom @ Aug 7th 2007 1:11PM
no widescreen? really?
Rob @ Aug 7th 2007 1:13PM
That looks like widescreen to me. There seems to be a black, maybe 1/2 inch, frame wrapped around the screen. So, this may in fact be widescreen.
tom @ Aug 7th 2007 1:16PM
my bad, looks like it is wide. was hard to tell in the first pic w/o seeing the screen turned on.
Judicatorr @ Aug 7th 2007 5:31PM
That doesn't look widescreen to me. If not, what a joke.
Michael Louviere @ Aug 7th 2007 1:46PM
You can tell by the resolutions they listed that they are widescreen models. IE: 1680x1050 is a 16:9 reso.
Scott @ Aug 7th 2007 3:00PM
"Michael
IE: 1680x1050 is a 16:9 reso."
1680x1050 is a 16:10 resolution.
urpwnd @ Aug 7th 2007 3:02PM
yay for math. 16:10 widescreen actually.
Nonono @ Aug 7th 2007 4:08PM
1680x1050 is a really idiotic resolution as 20" TFTs usually have 1600x1200 pixel.
Alex @ Aug 25th 2007 3:16PM
@nonono
1680x1050 is widescreen 16:10
1600x1200 is standard 4:3 and is usually a 20.1 inch screen
Galley @ Aug 7th 2007 6:23PM
No number pad on the keyboard?
taoprophet420 @ Aug 7th 2007 1:13PM
Who would have guessed a new imac? No hurry up and tell us what goodies it has inside.
vince @ Aug 7th 2007 1:14PM
Looks like an overgrown ipod to me. I dont like it.
DR PEPPER @ Aug 7th 2007 2:33PM
behold --- Vince the retard
shelterpaw @ Aug 7th 2007 3:18PM
DR PEPPER - You got me laughing out loud. First time in a long time. Thanks! :D
Sushi @ Aug 7th 2007 1:14PM
now that's yummy!
ryan @ Aug 7th 2007 1:16PM
1TB! I knew apple endorsed illegal downloading!
Wes @ Aug 9th 2007 8:56AM
No, they just want everybody to have $500,000 worth of Itunes downloads.
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Aug 7th 2007 1:18PM
Dang, look at the real estate on that thing! Very nice.
Keep it coming, Engadget!
Brandon @ Aug 7th 2007 1:25PM
Christ is that thing ever thin!! Nicely done Apple.
Chris @ Aug 7th 2007 1:26PM
Why would you make almost everything on the computer black, and then use white keys on the keyboard and a solid white mouse? This is one of the most mismatched designs Apple's put out in quite a while--I liked the old iMac design better.
Filippo @ Aug 7th 2007 2:08PM
I agree. Though, I don't the actual mighty mouse is going to be new iMac's pal for long. Have you read about the new patent Apple recently registered? The one for a mouse with multitouch enabled cover? Imagine that mouse in black and brushed aluminiun and the matching is done!
Matthew @ Aug 16th 2007 12:21PM
Me too! I like the old one with white color. Why I liked Apple because I saw its apple white color. Changing back to silver makes it similar to taiwanese cheap cheap monitor. It losts its apple style....
Cliff @ Aug 7th 2007 1:29PM
Wow... this is going to make a bad ass Windows Media Center machine, maybe we need to wait for the 30" before making that move.
Check out the one I have now on the Mac Mini

JJ @ Aug 7th 2007 1:29PM
O.o Wow, thinner than the previous iMac. After seeing photos of the innards of the older version and how they crammed so much in there, makes me wonder what they did this time to get it even thinner. Times sure have changed since the Apple IIe that I had in my elementary school's computer lab some 15 years ago. ^^;;
And, brushed aluminum looks mighty sexy.
PenaltyKillah @ Aug 9th 2007 5:59PM
Hmm... I think we're all still in love with white... and (brushed) metal on a Mac" That may be a step back... why not black brushed metal? The keyboard definitely looks thin, but the colour... it looks just like my old one, the one bundled with a Windows 98 PC... I'll rather upgrade a 3G iMac with Mac OS X Leopard but... oh yes, you can't dismantle an iMac and upgrade the processor and stuff... very clever, Apple.
CHADWICK @ Aug 7th 2007 1:30PM
its nice but i would never buy it
DR PEPPER @ Aug 7th 2007 2:37PM
Because you were born in a barn
CHADWICK @ Aug 7th 2007 2:40PM
o thats cute ha ha
shelterpaw @ Aug 7th 2007 3:30PM
It would make a great second entertainment system. Twenty Four inch screen with the Apple remote. Perfect for the bedroom to watch movies and late night surfing. Just think what you could do with the built in isight.
Yojimbo @ Aug 7th 2007 1:30PM
Wow... Beautiful!! Brushed aluminum is timeless, classy, and just the way to go! I wish my house was brushed aluminum... but then it would be a starship.
melloncollie @ Aug 7th 2007 3:46PM
It's not timeless.
Every see brushed aluminum on a building.
It looks like shit.
Yojimbo @ Aug 7th 2007 4:09PM
Your name, sadly, is all too appropriate.
Anthony @ Aug 7th 2007 1:44PM
what is that thing covered up next to steve?
jay @ Aug 7th 2007 2:16PM
I do believe just from what ive seen over a few blogs that is the back panel to teh new imac.
CHADWICK @ Aug 7th 2007 1:31PM
next
tim2short @ Aug 7th 2007 3:09PM
"wire free" keyboard? is that an upgradeable option; it is pictured as being wired to the imac. otherwise looks beautiful!
js @ Aug 7th 2007 1:34PM
Why are you surprised? This is basically a desktop computer with notebook components. We should expect it to be thin like the macbook pro.
omnicloud @ Aug 7th 2007 11:38PM
Yes but at least it has a desktop class DirectX 10 GPU and desktop SATA drives.
Miles @ Aug 8th 2007 4:52PM
I thought Macbook Pros had an 8600GT in them.
That's a DX10 card too.
Alan @ Aug 7th 2007 1:34PM
Glossy Display = Sadness
Homeboy @ Aug 7th 2007 1:48PM
I beg to differ. My laptop has a glossy screen and the LCD screen for my TFT doesn't. Reflections have never been a problem for me unless I'm sitting with my laptop outside, which is something I never do. But with a desktop it is always positioned so that run rays isn't directed at it, which means that you can go glossy all the way.
Glossy screens provide a more crisp and clear projection. Further more pictures/movies look more alive and vivid.
Jared @ Aug 7th 2007 2:53PM
I couldn't agree more. I just turned down an amazing deal on a 46" LCD TV that I've been saving up for for quite some time because when I went to look at it in the store all I saw were reflections, especially in low light scenes. What is the point of a 15k:1 contrast ratio if I can't make out whats on the screen.
For those of you who love your glossy notebooks, and I know there will be a lot of you. I have a MacBook and didn't have an option with the glossy vs non. It's bearable but only to the extent that I can reposition it, which is fine for a notebook. Also most of the time you have lots of white on the screen which helps to hide the glare.
When your talking about a desktop computer or a TV it's much more of a pain in the ass to reposition them to get rid of the glare. Many times moving furniture just isn't feasible.
Gloss is a total deal breaker for me and my entire organization, which is a shame because we were considering converting the entire office to iMacs. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens to the Mac Mini's or just get MBP's for everyone.
