MOTO techs out NFL coaches with RAZR-inspired headsets
Motorola has just announced plans to upgrade the NFL's current communication systems with two new technologies aimed at coaches and sideline crews as part of an ongoing collaboration between the football league and electronics-maker. The first upgrade is a coaches headset that takes its design cues from the company's RAZR2 phones, and is a lighter, thinner and more ergonomically advanced model -- so when the boss-man is screaming down the line for a new defensive strategy, an uncomfortable or awkward headset won't interfere with his rage. Additionally, Motorola is replacing the decades-old "phone tables" with its Sideline Communication Center, which will standardize communication throughout the league, and should vastly improve coordination of Gatorade dumping.

Leave Steve Belichick out of this. What a great moment that was for him and his son.

I've always wondered why the coaching staff in a multi million dollar league was forced to wear giant cans with the manufacturers logo glued to the side.
And they never seem to work right.

I don't know nothin' 'bout that footbally game of yers, but that pic looks...REFRESHING!
Especially with the high humidity we've been experiencing here in southern NJ!

What ever happened to the Telex intercom headsets that coaches wore a number of years ago? Telex was (and still is) a HUGE manufacturer of intercom systems for broadcast, theater and many other applications.
One year the very utilitarian Telex cans were just gone and replaced by sleeker Motorola branded headsets.
Guess the NFL had to get a name with more consumer recognition...Wonder how much moto paid them for the privilege...

Motorola has never actually made the comms systems for the NFL, it's a big advertisment. Telex actually makes the entire headset systems and Motorola pays big bucks to put their name on the headsets.
Shane @ Aug 10th 2007 11:42AM
Somehow I suspected as much. Good to hear some confirmation of that. Nobody's ever heard of Telex outside of the broadcast and theater industries...

I wonder if any of this "new technology" addresses the NFL coaches' paranoia that causes them to hold their playcard up infront of their mouth when they talk into the damn things. I know they're worried about lip readers with spotting scopes... c'mon Motorola. Fix a real problem here - verbal cloaking device!

"The new Sideline Communication Centers feature 16 phones in a durable mobile case complete with golf cart wheels, disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering for easy transportation on and off the field."
Disc brakes?? These communication centers have more safety features that my current car!
