Dell prepping Precision M6300?

Notebook Italia has shots and specifications for a rumored 17-inch Dell Precision M6300 laptop, which could replace the ageing Dell Precision M90. We'll start with the most interesting feature, which is a BTO option for up to 8GB of installed RAM available when you include a copy of Vista 64-bit. Beyond that, the M6300 is rumored to feature Intel Core 2 Duos from 1.8GHz up to 2.4GHz, with a 2.6GHz Intel Core Extreme X7800 topping out the line. It'll also come with options for NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M, 2600M, or FX 3600M graphics cards. There will apparently also be options for 1440x900, 1900x1200, and 1920x1200 glossy and matte displays, and a Blu-ray drive configuration. The word is that this model could ship by August 31st, so at least you haven't got long to wait.

Hey Dell, like many users I'll only buy a laptop with both a trackpad and pointing stick. If you're going to have a laptop this high-end you should really pay attention to user input preferences.

The very elite who do use the nipple have long since been ostracized to IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads. Apple has never included a pointing stick, and yet you don't see 1st posts along the lines of "pfft... no 1990-esque pointing stick so I'm not buying..."

Dell doesn't cater to small handfuls of customers and those preferring pointing sticks fall into that category. If such devices were in significant demand you'd see many more manufacturers offering them. Pointing sticks suck.

Actually, the reason you don't see pointing sticks in more notebooks has nothing to do with direct consumer preference for/against pointing sticks. It has everything to do with manufacturing costs, and consumer preference for cheap.

Adding a pointing stick to a laptop will cost $5~6 at the factory in China in materials alone (to say nothing of labor, assembly, drivers/software/support). Thus a pointing stick will translate to an added cost of $25~50 at retail.

I for one, love pointing sticks, and Lenovo's implementation is way better than Dell's. Thus I buy Lenovo. Can't wait for my X61 tablet to arrive in a couple weeks. That said, if more makers offer a pointing stick BTO option, I would certainly consider it (are you listening Apple?).

It has EVERYTHING to do with consumer preference and anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. Dell has offered pointing sticks in the past.

Any proof of that? Just how can you know?

IBM had little success with the pointing sticks besides integrating them in their notebooks. The reason was that no one really wanted them. On the other hand, trackpads are pervasive and there's no way a trackpad costs less to manufacture than a pointing stick.

It uses the sides of the keyboard for cooling - if you look you can see two small vents either side, under each is a copper heatsink. I'm using an XPS 2 with exactly the same cooling design and it actually works extremely well as it can draw air from above and the sides of the laptop, it doesn't rely getting air in underneath.

The Clevo systems of similar spaec I've used with full size keyboards have no cooling in this area and need to be on a solid surface to get the cool air into the system.

Your MacBook Pro doesn't include Quadro graphics and that's what makes these machines expensive. There are other Dell notebooks that match the componentry of a MBP very closely for far less money. An Inspiron 1720 can be configured to very near MBP 17 specs for about $800 less. Go on believing your MBP is a good value though.

Seeing as it is very much the XPS 1710 / M90 / E1705 form factor, the port arrangements are identical, but there is a docking station port on the bottom, as expected and hoped.
