It has everything to do with manufacturing costs, and consumer preference for cheap. <br><br>Adding a pointing stick to a laptop will cost $5~6 at the factory in China in materials alone (to say nothing of labor, assembly, drivers/software/support).  Thus a pointing stick will translate to an added cost of $25~50 at retail.  <br><br>I for one, love pointing sticks, and Lenovo's implementation is way better than Dell's.  Thus I buy Lenovo.  Can't wait for my X61 tablet to arrive in a couple weeks. Just how can you know?<br><br>IBM had little success with the pointing sticks besides integrating them in their notebooks.  The reason was that no one really wanted them. There are other Dell notebooks that match the componentry of a MBP very closely for far less money.  An Inspiron 1720 can be configured to very near MBP 17 specs for about $800 less.
