Intel inside the next XO OLPC?
Could the next laptop to emerge from the OLPC organization be powered by Intel chips? That's the suggestion of OLPC News, which sees the FAQ attached to Intel's announcement of joining the board at OLPC as a sign that Intel's chips could work their way into the XO-2. At the very least, the servers that support the $100 XO PCs will be Intel based: quoting from the FAQ, it says that "OLPC is planning to add Intel Xeon processor based servers to their product offerings." Intel is also taking steps to develop a system board for the next gen XO, although all designs are subject to OLPC approval. Seems like OLPC's gone full circle from "Intel should be ashamed of itself" to "thank you Intel!"[Via OLPC News]

This may make the OLPC more desirable than that Medison, maybe, just maybe.

Next week's headline "Microsoft's Windows Vista has been approved as the OS for the OLPC."
If Intel managed its way to become a major player, Microsoft will be right behind them trying to manipulate their way into this product. It's not MS bashing. That's how the big corporate world works.

"Seems like OLPC's gone full circle from "Intel should be ashamed of itself" to "thank you Intel!""
Do Engadget writers have to use this kind of spin? I thought it was pretty clear that it was Intel that did the turn around and went from totally dissing the OLPC to joining the camp a few weeks back.

Hey, that means all OLPC machines in the future will come with the "centcheapo" platform.

Wonder why they don't look at Via's C7-M? It's a great low-power platform, has *enough* processing power, and Intel still can't beat them for processing power/watt.

Yes, thank you, Gentle Intel, paragon of corporate virtue! I'm sure all that negative PR had absolutely nothing to do with your decision!

"Seems like OLPC's gone full circle from "Intel should be ashamed of itself" to "thank you Intel!""
You mean: "it seems Intel has threatened to ruin the humanitarian OLPC project to such a degree that they're now forced to let Intel join it".
The way Intel has shamelessly plagiarised the OLPC concept in order to destroy it is one of the most disgusting examples of corporate greed I've ever seen. This was all about market share for Intel and nothing else.

This is bull! and Intel knows it. AMD started this project as a non-profit attempt to give less fortunate children the same educational opportunity as those who cannot afford the technology. When Intel realized how much attention it was getting from the media, they had to make sure there logo was all over it. Obviously Intel is a larger company and can afford give up the chips at an even cheaper price than AMD already was, so this is how it ended up. AMD already donated so much time and money in the project and Intel is going to get the recognition. I will never buy another Intel product again!!

Does this mean that John Deere will be making the cranks for the Xeon based servers?

OLPC news is not a reliable source of information on the OLPC project. They represent themselves dishonestly. They like scandal and snarking. I have been really disappointed with their observations as I have read them over time.
