I could get a serial adapter PCI card for $40 that will work, and everything will work perfectly fine. So, because of that, the cost of upgrading to Vista is a lot more than what would be reasonable. Sure, it's not Vista's fault that developers don't write drivers and software for it. But if they had included a reasonable amount of backwards compatibility with software and drivers, then none of this would be a problem.

Hardware that engineers use is not like an $80 video card. It's not uncommon to see someone using a 12 year old plotter (like out DesignJet 650C, which doesn't work in Vista either by the way). Total Stations and survey equipment is used for 20 years before they need to get a new one. It's not obsoleted every 2 months like computer processors, video cards, et cetera. Comparing a plotter to a video card and telling me to upgrade is completely outrageous. The plotter works perfectly fine. I don't need it to go faster or plot higher quality. A new plotter will do the exact same thing.

This whole thing is absurd.
