Upgrading will add some additional features such as the capability to run EPP 800+ memory, or to drop in a quad core processor. Most would never realize the difference. From the beginning there was a concern that a customer would worry that something was wrong with their machine. There isn't anything defective with the XPS 700. Dell is simply providing an opportunity to add a few features to those that are "looking for them". If you love your machine and it is working fine, doing all that you want it to do, than there is no need to worry. None! The downside, if any, to upgrading motherboards is that you will have to spend additional money to enjoy the benefits of the new board- such as buying more expensive memory or a new quad core cpu. Not to mention that you might want to reformat and reinstall your OS, programs and files. If you go to the direct2dell.com blog you can find all of the relevant information. At the top on the left hand box there is a place where all 16 of the articles have been archived. Enjoy the upgrade or just keep enjoying what you already have; but either way you are in good shape!

David Marshall

Comments on Dell's XPS Motherboard Exchange Program goes live

David,
Your opinion on this is absurd. Do you work for Dell?
We (most Dell XPS 700 owners) bought a PC that we thought had dual SLI capability, was upgradable to 800mhz memory, and could also be upgraded to a quad core CPU if we wanted to drop one in. After spending a lot of money for this PC we found that most of the features available on the Intel motherboard were turned off. Their (Dell’s) stance was “we offered a PC that is stable, the upgradable options we shut down on the motherboard were done to insure that the PC will run to our specs” (read that as ‘proprietary’). That’s a load of BS, if you ask 90% of the XPS 700 buyers. We didn’t buy a Dimension; we paid a premium for the XPS. The advice in your post is better fitted to a Dimension owner, not an XPS owner.
We didn’t spend big bucks on a Dell XPS gaming PC just to find out, after the sale, that our PC’s weren’t upgradable. We raised hell, and Dell answered (over 1.5 years later). The free upgrade Dell is offering to XPS 700 owners is one that should be taken advantage of no matter what. You paid a premium for the PC you got because it should do it all, but in OEM form it doesn’t. They’ll even come to your house to make it right! For free! Everyone should take advantage of that. To tell an XPS 700 owner anything different is just furthering the rip off they already got from Dell!

Joe

Comments on Dell's XPS Motherboard Exchange Program goes live

How come Dell didn't send letters out about this exchange program?
