SanDisk bumps its Cruzer Micro series to 8GB
No matter how many we lose in the couch, we just can never get enough capacity in our thumb drives and SanDisk never seems to get tired of meeting our demands. The company just announced that it's sticking 8GB of flash into its Cruzer Micro USB flash drives, and will sell the new model mid-September for around $130. Of course, you can always score a 4GB drive for $70, or even a 2GB for $40, so choose your obscene amount of flash capacity wisely.

$130 might be a little steep.

I produce graphics for remote sports tv. My Cruzer 4GB is one of my backup sources and is invaluable.

Maybe $99 as I got a I/O Magic 8GB for $99 after taxes. Only difference is the the size. The I/O Magic is the size of a standard cell phone battery. I guess the extra 30 for the Cruz is for convenience of it being on your keychain.

Actually you can get a pack of three 2gb Cruzer Micros at Costco. They are marked 49.99, but there's a 10 dollar off coupon. When I went the guy at the register had the coupon. It's a pretty nice deal if you lose your flash drives a lot like I do.
Richard @ Aug 28th 2007 12:33PM
fyi, Circuit City had the 4 GB cruzer micro on sale last week (it might still be, check online) for in-stone pickup at the great price of $34.99.
4 gigs! $35! I can't believe I paid over $100 for a 512 once upon a time!
www.portableapps.com FTW, btw.
dj-kenpo @ Aug 28th 2007 1:32PM
I can't beleive I paid 179.99 for a 128mb once upon a time!
they guy at compusmart was like, why not just get a zip drive?
that was years and years ago now, back when no one used flash drives... ahh good times. not really.
John @ Aug 28th 2007 12:34PM

Radio Shmack has had the 4GB Cruzer Micros on sale at 34.99 for a while now.
www.portableapps.com : A great site for freeware portable apps that can run from these things.
Good stuff.
Bryan @ Aug 28th 2007 1:02PM
Don't forget the shitty U3 software!
granny down east @ Aug 28th 2007 1:15PM
What you said.

I know it's bad but at least it includes a free antivirus...
... so I can clean my friend's PCs. I don't need that, I've got a Mac.
strider_mt2k @ Aug 28th 2007 1:52PM
U3 is the FIRST thing I remove.
Don't need it, don't like it.
oshean @ Aug 28th 2007 1:12PM
Time to upgrade your USB thumbdrive RAID array.
Mike @ Aug 28th 2007 1:21PM
no offense, but 'portableapps' is junk. you'd be 1000x better off with ubuntu on the drive.
or, just look for many of the other wonderful portable applications out there that doesn't require 'portableapps' to run them.
and honestly, firefox runs just fine without portableapps, if you know the simple hack to make it save all profile stuff on the drive.
It's okay for mindless noobs, but anything similar to a U3 launcher makes me cringe when it's unneeded.
strider_mt2k @ Aug 28th 2007 1:57PM
Mike,
You don't have to use their launcher.
I like PStart personally, and to build my own "suite" of portable applications.
The site itself it a great place to get the apps, and for help and support if you want to get into it deeper.
The PortableApps Suite they offer is just gravy for the goose, as it lets you get started with a launcher and a bunch of commonly used portable applications right away.
No need for the hate.
You run as many layers of whatever you like and more power to ya.
Rob @ Aug 28th 2007 1:18PM
Someone help me understand something here.
Why pay $130 for 8gigs of storage, when you can get a "WD 60gig Passport" for $35 or "WD 160gig Passport" for $90. Damn, that's a huge price difference there.
Sure flash memory is more resistant to damage from being moved around. But $130 is way up there.
Anyway, if you don't mind the premium, then ...
jonthedog @ Aug 28th 2007 1:28PM
I'm still coming to terms with the size of my Treo. I don't think the Passport hanging on my keys would help the pocket situation much.
strider_mt2k @ Aug 28th 2007 2:08PM
I like how I can carry my flash drive on my keys without worries.
Russ Johnson @ Aug 28th 2007 4:17PM
because it doesn't fit on your keychain!!!! Sheesh!! :)
Actually I lovemy 4GB cruzer. I got the thing booting with a DUBCD and it's all I need just about everything.
Rob @ Aug 28th 2007 4:37PM
Hey, I'm not knocking it at all. Sure it's sweet to carry 8gigs in that little unit.
I'm just thinking of the price. I'm just using the $:gig ratio.
Again, if you don't mind the premium, then ...
Enzo @ Aug 28th 2007 1:22PM
In my day usb thumbdrives were 64 mb or 128 mb and that's all we needed...
dj-kenpo @ Aug 28th 2007 1:33PM
no one will ever need more than 64k--umm mb of flash! :p
Mike @ Aug 28th 2007 1:43PM
I personally love my 4gb verbatim flash drive...it blazes all of my Micros. Only 39$ at compusa a while back. I should really go get another one.
2gig partition for ubuntu, and 2x 500mb partitions for music and java files. Rest is dedicated to programs, readystart, and my launching program that locks out everyone from my comp, unless i got the drive inserted :P
Galley @ Aug 28th 2007 1:36PM
I remember when I scored a 256MB Lexar JumpDrive for $90. I was sporting a tremendous woody that day!
dj-kenpo @ Aug 28th 2007 1:36PM
now just make an 8gb ssd for $130 and I'm there. (might be small, but enough for os+programming compiler..)
I hate the gulf between flash and ssd right now, 8gb flash for ~100$ 32gb ssd for $1500.... gah!
Iain @ Oct 28th 2007 12:17AM
Mate, eBay.

Love my 2gb. Need a 4gb, but will wait for the 8gb to get down in price ($80 or less).
For now, just using another 2gb that I got for $20 last week.

I just bought a 4GB Cruzer micro at Wal*Mart for $50
I thought it was a steal, and 4GB should be plenty for me.. (DVD in my pocket!)
Dualboot @ Aug 28th 2007 6:30PM
Uhm, I have a Corsair Voyager in my pocket, it carries 16GB and only cost $200...
http://www.corsairmemory.com/products/voyager.aspx
No U3 required, just TrueCrypt and a folder sync software. Voila. All my data from work comes home with me, without a laptop...
hello45044 @ Aug 29th 2007 4:05PM
Dang! 16 gigs! Thats insane! Pretty soon flash drive will be up into the hundreds of gigs and people will be like lol I cant believe your flash drive is only 8 gb.
And you don't need to use U3 with the Cruisers, you can easily take it off and use any launcher you want, or no launcher.
Best Deal @ Aug 28th 2007 9:05PM
'Good pr' thinks that's a steal. He got ripped off. The RadioShack by my house had a sale and sold 4gb cruzer micro flashdrives for, get this, $35. Now that's a deal. Also, 1gb for only $15.
woowoo @ Nov 11th 2007 3:40AM
I got a 8GB @ wal mart for 80.00
dave @ Oct 28th 2007 1:14AM
i just got a cruzer micro 2GB for $20.
but i'd rather have a cruzer titanium, they feel so much more solid and durable.
