for $700 i can buy a mac mini and a power inverter, and probably have enough scratch to get me most of the way there to a GPS reciver.

The only thing it doesn't do is play video, but it's a car navigation device, not a PMP for crying out loud.
And mac mini? You can't be serious. The GPS receiver alone would cost at least 100 dollars, and you conveniently forgot to add a screen as well. A few years ago, these things were thousands of dollars. Like any piece of technology, the price has/is come down drastically. You guys underestimate these little devices.
In a form factor the size of an iPod, these things empower users to know EXACTLY where they are on anywhere in North America. The POI database preloaded on these things also covers 'most' of every single business/park/road/etc. in North American. I think that's pretty amazing.
