That is one thing I would want in it... I would most likely mod the thing to put a window into. The things really do look ugly once the side panel is off. The blue plastic going all over isn't too attractive either. I wouldn't mind seeing more silent fans and a better design for airflow. Maybe once they nail those issues I will think about buying one.

cullen_d

Comments on Dell XPS 420 slated for October 19th launch

higher res pictures would have been nice.

looks to be a powerful and affordable pc...

Sarah

Comments on Dell XPS 420 slated for October 19th launch

the 420, huh? Even saying the airflow isn't good from these pictures and that cable management is bad. Wow. Try building a PC with the same spec for the same money and there is no way you can have it run more quit and stable.}

Anything OEM can be built at a cheaper price, that's the purpose of DIY. As for stability, I put a lot more trust in an Asus or MSI motherboard than I do a Dell one made in a Chinese sweat shop.

{These systems are thoruoghly tested for noise and airflow, something that would cost a fortune to do if you tried to do it for one build}

Why does it need airflow testing, it's common sense that heat rises, and always have the same amount of air flowing out that flows in...if that costs a fortune, then I must say someone is using the wrong research company. Have a fan or two in, a fan or two out, and always keep it flowing to the back and up if possible, duh. If you want it quiet, adjust your BIOS settings for fan control unless your using a crappy motherboard that forces you to use molex for the fans in which case you just buy whisper quite fans.

{As for windows and glowing insides, well, you are not the kind of person Dell builds PC's for. As for how it looks when the cover is off, well it sure ruins the airflow...}

Ok genius, this is the XPS...the elite Dell gaming computer. It's not an office workers desktop PC, its a college kids gaming rig. Yes, looks are important to the XPS line. When the covers off, its all plastic, it screams I'm made in China(CHEAP). DIY rigs are normally aluminum, steel, or anything but plastic.

{Of course I can't really speak for this models sound level or airflow from these pictures but so can noone else. My experience with (corporate) Dell PC's is that they are super silent. The airflow is excellent and stability top notch.}

I agree, most Dell's are super quiet, but this is the XPS again, not grandpa's p0rn viewing machine.

{Trying to build a PC with the same specs is here in sweden no saving at all. We really have no real competition to dell right now if you want intel chipset. And what is wrong with BTX? Is it that it is a result of research and science?}

BTX is more to be a proprietary system to force you to have to return to Dell for main parts. You can replace that board with any other but a BTX of that design, obviously making you pay Dell outrageous price for a sweat shop made motherboard.

ALL IN ALL, Save your money, buy your own custom rig, parts come cheap when you really look for them. I happen to know since I work for a large well known computer shop that does repairs and customs.

Victor S

Comments on Dell XPS 420 slated for October 19th launch

"I put a lot more trust in an Asus or MSI motherboard than I do a Dell one made in a Chinese sweat shop. "
I am pretty these taiwanese companies outsource production to china as well. What dell does is the the system as a whole. On the componentlevel I am pretty sure there is no difference in quality.

"Why does it need airflow testing,..."
I'll just stop here. That is a key difference in stability and noice levels, making sure the right tempered air comes to the right components with minimal noise. If you don't understand this then there is no argument, you can build a cheaper PC.

BTX is by the also developed for better airflow, but that doesnt matter since it is just a matter of blowing in air to the chassis anyway, right?

On your last point however, you are right, Dell PCs are not very good for swapping components, motherboards I wouldn't recommend anyway but the processor is very hard to change and in at least corporate models the form factor of the PSU is propriety. Making it hard to upgrade to power hungry GPUs.

BTX is not a dell propriety standard, it has been developed by Intel and is a standard which few uses.
