Ok, so we can confirm Sony's just pushed out the
PlayStation 3 v1.92 update, the first new firmware in over a month. The trouble is they're not telling us what's been changed, fixed, updated, added, removed, improved, etc. Anyone seen anything different? Let us know in comments such that we all might benefit from your eagle-eyedness.
Update: The
update appears limited to performance enhancements for the PlayStation Store and PS2 game support -- minor updates in line with a point-0-0 release.
[Thanks, RicanJoe and Matt]

Allow you play game on your little screen!
Chris @ Sep 4th 2007 2:52AM
I can understand some wording being in the typical 41 page agreement no one reads...but still...how can they alter the console I purchased without telling me what the hell they are doing/did?
Thats like walking outside of your house in the morning and seeing the dealership guys walking away, wrenches in hand, saying they fixed your vehicle for free...uhhh...wtf did they just do?
This should not be allowed.
M @ Sep 4th 2007 3:03AM
You can just not install it?
One of my PS3 is still original firmware.

The update was meant for Japan first(which is why its up so late at night). But since the PS3 is region free it comes up in all regions. The change log has been up on the Japanese site; will likely be up when the US Sony employees get to work tomorrow morning and update the changelog for the US site.

makes me wants a PS3 even more :(
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Sep 4th 2007 5:26AM
Some time ago my friend bought a PSP. And I bought DS. He cited as main reason that PSP is upgradeable.
Year later, he more or less doesn't touch his PSP. And I play with DS more or less everyday (I commute a lot).
I'm buying games every month. He stopped buying games after several shitty titles. And there is no way in Germany to try PSP games before buying. And R4/M3 works beautifully on DS.
So my question is. Why people are so addicted to updates???
dork @ Sep 4th 2007 3:04AM
Word at NeoGaf says that the Internet Browser application has been substantially improved.
Cancel the screensaver option: It's always been there.
Controllers auto-power-off now.
Miniclips (thumbnails) in the videos section, and game clips in the games folder all load up synchronized now. Quitting from game into XMB transitions quicker.(Aesthetic/Efficiency Update)
Confirmed: PS1/PS2 Compatibility updated.
Still awaiting official changelog from Sony.

It allows you to do more than ever with a PS3 whatever that is...... I kid,I kid I think the PS3 will do well with more Good games not there is not any out now and improved online play and update speeds because theres got to be a few still waiting for it finish to tell us whats changed. SONY btw add a universal headset so All online games can have voice chat.
Terminator @ Sep 4th 2007 3:54AM
Notice how many Xbot kiddies there are posting here.
Perhaps all their 360's are off for repair, and they have nothing better to do.
E.J. @ Sep 4th 2007 5:22AM
I own both a PS3 and 360, but when my 360 was off to repair, my PS3 was rarely even touched.
Perhaps, you may have nothing better to do yourself since there aren't no games for your single system besides Warhawk (excellent, BTW). Why don't you try going multi? Your blind loyalty is totally last-gen.
On topic:
I'll update my PS3 later, but having the ability to adjust screen settings for PS1 and PS2 games sounds like a great addition! I hope this means the ability to stretch non-widescreen games.

Sony have been doing absolutely no B/C updates for ps2 games in europe since the stories have dropped out the press, which is just what D Reeves said would happen, so i guess he can tell the truth somtimes!
http://www.scee.presscentre.com/Content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID=4331&NewsAreaID=2
David Reeves>>> "Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3"
Then there is the ps3 compatibility list which sucks btw, sonys idea of a game working is that it will load, the graphical issues, freezes and total crashes don't matter when you need to make the list as big as you can to silence the media!

To have the best experience when playing your PlayStation®2 titles, we recommend that:
1. You avoid connecting any non-essential USB peripherals to your PS3
2. You avoid the use of "60Hz" and network modes (which may experience noticeable graphical corruption not present in the main game)
3. You should skip optional FMV sequences (a small number of games have graphical corruption in one or more video sequences).
4. A maximum of seven players can play (non-network) multiplayer PS2 games.

Mak @ Sep 4th 2007 3:59AM
Almost every single firmware release in Europe has improved PS2 compatability. You are talking XBot fanboy crap.
I have one single issue on my Euro PS3 playing my entire PS1/PS2 catalog of about 80 or so games, it's with GranTurismo 4, and a flashing square box in the top L/H corner of the screen, everything else is 100% perfect. I'm sure even this non-criticalissue will be eventually resolved.
Either way, it's a million times more complete that Xbox emulation on the 360.
stephenbratz2 @ Sep 4th 2007 3:57AM
I have not upgraded the firmware in a while (I know I was running on pre-1.9), but what makes me mad is tonight I pop in Big Fish to watch with the GF (one of her favorite movies - not mine) and before I can watch the movie I have to update the firmware. 45 minutes later, we can finally watch the movie. 45 minutes to even start a movie does not make a good impression for Blu-ray. And people complain about the startup time of the HD-A2. I have an HD-A2, and I have never had to update the firmware to watch any movies there.
Mak @ Sep 4th 2007 6:58AM
OK, you're an idiot.
YOU ARE NOT FORCED TO UPDATE WHEN PS3 SAYS SO. YOU CAN DO IT WHEN YOU WANT TO.
understand? The PS3 boots and plays a movie 17 seconds from power-on to movie playing. The Toshibas are between 90 seconds (at best) and 160 seconds on the older HD DUD units.
stephenbratz2 @ Sep 4th 2007 12:03PM
Typical. I put in a disk, and I am told that if I want to continue to watch the movie, I need to upgrade the firmware. It was a long process that took 45 minutes. I do not have to do this every time, just once. Because of this I am an idiot? I am not a big fan of the PS3, but the movies that I have I have enjoyed. But you little fanboys that want to call names because of a problem, you are not helping your cause promoting the PS3/Blu-ray very much.
Silverfrog @ Sep 4th 2007 2:31PM
Stephen, why, may I ask, did it take you 45 minutes to download firmware? It took me a whole 2 minutes to download it, and maybe another 3 minutes to install and restart. Oooh, that was soooo difficult. But, not 45 minutes worth.
pigfister @ Sep 4th 2007 8:10AM
what a complete tool read the OFFICIAL SONY list that i supplied and stop spreading fud, i have a huge catalogue of ps2 games that fail to work on my ps3 without severe issues, you call me an fanboy and where did i even mention the m$ machine dumb ass.
read the OFFICIAL SONY PAGES WITH THE LINKS I SUPPLIED SHOWING HOW BAD B/C IS ON THE none ee ps3.
Jason Kam @ Sep 4th 2007 3:58AM
Can someone please verify whether or not Lair is still playable on the PSP? Or did Sony fix this bug with the update?
MikeG @ Sep 7th 2007 6:48PM
It's not a bug, it's an actual feature?
zsyco @ Sep 4th 2007 4:15PM
I wasn't going to post anything but people are talking about 360 fans commenting here.
When Microsoft started doing quarterly firmware updates, they were dogged by other fans.... things like "buggy POS, they should have never released" and "I'd never get one because it's never going to be finished." You can only imagine the things that were said when there were multiple updates in a short period. Some people are just giving back what they got.
I am a 360 fan, but, I can appreciate regular updates by any company. It just shows that they care about the fact that they need to keep things fresh for the end user.
O2 @ Sep 4th 2007 8:56AM
they simply like to play on how many updates per month they can do...
Miacol @ Sep 4th 2007 9:36AM
I think the updates are needed and I am glad that companies are doing them. This is an era where the software is as important as the hardware and it needs updates to stay current and provide us with the service we demand.
lopez.dennis @ Sep 4th 2007 9:32AM
Im still waiting for Sony to enable ATM and retinal scanner. Im happy with the coffee warmer.
Joshua Cunningham @ Sep 4th 2007 9:35AM
Who care what its for! Thus far the PS3 might as well be a standalone bluray player. I sure haven't been playing any game my PS2 could've played.
BrotherhoodOfNod @ Sep 4th 2007 9:37AM
Hum, even if I'm not upgrading, won't hurt to download the firmware and have it around. Who knows, perhaps the PS3 will go the way of the PSP downgrades...
Er, that's if it can be downloaded from a PC. I think it can, but it's been a while since I checked.
Mak @ Sep 4th 2007 2:02PM
You obviously are an idiot, as you have trouble reading.
THE PS3 DID NOT TELL YOU THAT YOU HAD TO UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE TO WATCH THE MOVIE.
It told you there was new system software available, if you wanted it.
I suggest heading back to school.
tristanfey @ Sep 4th 2007 5:59PM
There are no movies out right now (DVD or Bluray) that cannot be played on the PS3, even if you are on the original firmware version. So you either misread the message as Mak pointed out or you are trying to cause some static for Sony, PS3 or/and Bluray. You could have come up with a more believable story as well.
First, you would have gotten a message about an available update even with a standard DVD, so its funny that you make sure to say it looks bad for Bluray. Second, firmware updates are a couple MBs at most and since the PS3 requires a broadband connection there is no way it should have taken anywhere near 45 minutes to download and install unless your ISP is that bad, in which case you should be pointing the blame at them. And if you had never updated the firmware the additional time over the standard 2-3 minutes for an update would basically have been your fault.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the X-Box 360, but I cannot see myself buying a system that has no real games to play that cannot also be played on a PC, which I already own (See GoW, which was every 360 owners response of why you have to get a 360). Add on top of that Microsoft themselves estimate the hardware failure on the 360 to be 1 in 3, which does not fill me full of confidence.
Shahzad Farooqui @ Sep 4th 2007 12:17PM
Is it worth to upgrade to 1.92?

I have a PAL PS3 (Australian) - love it - however the software emulation BC can suck sometimes.
Doesn't help that the only PS2 games I really wanted to play on it were Ratchet & Clank 2 and 3. Loved R&C1 on my PS2 (now handed down to friends), so I bought 2 and 3 in anticipation of getting my PS3. Yes they both work, but only just. Frame rate is appalling - it's like playing them on slow motion.
It's probably fine for a lot of other old PS2 games - just not the 2 I want to play :-) Wasn't expecting the software emulation here in Australia. Strange "cost-cutting" strategy that didn't actually cut our prices - just Sony's.
KobraKommander @ Sep 5th 2007 12:06PM
I have only played two older titles so far on my ps3 and they both play great. one is an old ps1 game called spec ops: ranger elite and the other is MGS 3 snake eater for ps2 and it also plays flawlessly.
I wish now I had not traded in all my old ps2 games a year ago so I would have games to play now hahah.
The ps3 is great but the games are sparse, my 360 r.r.o.d.'ed on me so I am now waiting on my pre ordered halo 3 limited edition 360 to be able to play all my 360 stuff.
clongange3 @ Sep 7th 2007 10:39PM
I am a playstation fan and it takes me about 45 minutes to download an update. Mac you might have a faster DSL company then we do. And Mac how you said that you can just not download the update. Can you still play a game online without having to download it. But anyways I wanted to know if anybody else has had a problem downloading the new update. I got done downloading the first part of the download and it got to the second part... it stops on 49% every time and it says an error has occurred. And every time I turn on my PS3 it tries to download it again and I can't go anywhere else. Is there anything that I can do to fix it without having to send in my PS3 to get fixed!
christopher koczwara @ Sep 8th 2007 12:06PM
has anyone one heard the rumor of a ps3 emulator?
