Oh sweet, sweet
SSD. BiTMICRO clearly shares our love for that speedy, stable and battery-friendly form of storage, and is letting the world know with its new 416GB 2.5-inch SSD drive, which as far as we can tell is the largest amount of flash memory yet to be
crammed into that form factor. Dubbed the E-Disk Altima ATA-133, the line starts out at 4GB for the spendthrifts out there, but ramps up to 416GB for some indeterminate and undoubtedly large price. They should be shipping by March of next year.

Damn. If only I had bottomless pockets.
Jonathan Keim @ Sep 11th 2007 11:56AM
How would bottomless pockets help you purchase this? ;-)
HoldenCfld @ Sep 11th 2007 11:59AM
Figuratively.
Andir3.0 @ Sep 11th 2007 12:18PM
You can fit more loot in bottomless pockets.
Major Malfunction @ Sep 11th 2007 12:35PM
But you could never reach it.... bottomless, ya know?
Marshall @ Sep 11th 2007 2:00PM
I had bottomless pockets once. Then I sewed them up so my keys wouldn't fall out of the bottom of my pant leg and onto the floor. Before taking this step, I lost several pens and some coins.
Kiwi616 @ Sep 11th 2007 10:52AM
Hopefully this brings down the $$$ and they start putting this into camcorders
Jonathan Keim @ Sep 11th 2007 10:53AM
I'm for that as well, but please, give us an AVI option! Some of us like uncompressed video to edit after we're done
alexdodd @ Sep 11th 2007 10:55AM
Very very young technology, but it can only get better. I can't wait to replace my laptop hard drive for something of similar size SSD for a "sensible" price!
Porfuse @ Sep 11th 2007 11:03AM
ill take it !
Matt Peckham @ Sep 11th 2007 10:59AM
So, is that the evil SSD that is spawning all these 2GB flash drives? We should send Sigourney Weaver after it!
fontendet24 @ Sep 11th 2007 10:58AM
When this thing will be in iPod, iPhone?
Bogdan @ Sep 11th 2007 11:46AM
I'm sorry to say this, but today Apple officially reported that they'll block the function that previously allowed to add more storage to their devices. This came as no surprise to many analytics (read: fanboys) who are still shocked by this week's "add button" saga.
Benson @ Sep 11th 2007 4:05PM
AVI != uncompressed video
Don't confuse codecs with container formats!
mentalsticks @ Sep 11th 2007 11:00AM
Is that an odd-shaped SSD in my pocket or am I just happy to read this?
Jeremy K. @ Sep 11th 2007 11:08AM
w00t! Now for someone to make an awesome pmp out of this.
tchiseen @ Sep 11th 2007 11:11AM
oh dear me, that's a lot of storage for a single drive, even for a standard 3.5. all i can say is wow. how much does everyone think this is going to cost next year?? $2,000 ? $3,000? more? i want one.
Tush @ Sep 11th 2007 11:13AM
The death of the standard HDD is coming
ark_v2 @ Sep 11th 2007 5:43PM
And I hope it comes fast, I really want to get a SSD for a reasonable price.

2.5"? this would be sweet for PS3 ubuntu. Now bring down the price for me, there's a good company.
Lucas Couvreur @ Sep 11th 2007 12:01PM
Damn two days ago only 200 Gb or something ?
And now allready 416Gb :o
So how much Gb will it be in a month ? 20TB :)
duh george @ Sep 12th 2007 6:22PM
hmm, either your memory of Moore's Law is a bit fuzzy, or your math is just really bad
jerrt @ Sep 11th 2007 12:15PM
my ps3 just got hot and bothered thinking about all that ssd space. too bad the price is going to be crazy high.
QR134 @ Sep 11th 2007 12:25PM
I'll start the bidding at $5.00.
Andir3.0 @ Sep 11th 2007 12:33PM

What're we saying the over/under is on the price of that bad boy? I'm thinking $3000 is a good number...and I'm gonna be optimistic and take UNDER
dj-kenpo @ Sep 11th 2007 12:58PM
a 64gb is $1000, so It'll be way over $3000.
but who cares. 4 years from now these thigns will be dirt cheap.
remember just 3 years ago when 17" lcd's were $999?
ya, that didn't stick too long now did it.
flash, be it normal or ssd is small, more and more companies will be pumping it out, expect 1tb within 3 months
DeWeese @ Sep 11th 2007 2:17PM
This is amazing news, by the time it goes into production there will be even better capabilities. But just knowing that this is possible means great expectations from cameras, using flash drives in computers instead of hard drives, and for my enjoyment, more storage on flash based mp3 players and phones. Hello 416gb iphone. haha
Robert Johnston @ Sep 11th 2007 1:15PM
Oh, for Buckner's ever-full money clip. These things are in the "If you have to ask, you can't afford" price bracket.
Still, a nice RAID array of these, in a quad-quad-core Opteron system with 64GB of RAM and Quad-SLI Quadro Graphics cards should come close to running Vista at a reasonable rate... ;) j/k.
Tom @ Sep 12th 2007 12:22PM
Don't be daft. It'd still hang.
I'll take 3.11 for workgroups anyday, thank you. And that's coming from an OS X user.
Jonathan Sundy @ Sep 11th 2007 1:24PM
According to iSupply it's currently around $8.75 per gb of flash.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/iphone-only-costs-250-to-make-rest-of-price-is-fanboy-tax-229664.php
So that would mean this drive would cost $3,587.50 which honestly isn't that incredibly bad. But factor in low production, and maybe some special engineering (plus the fact that if you NEED this you can afford it) it could be anywhere from 5 to 10 grand (complete conjecture).
Ricksta @ Sep 11th 2007 1:49PM
Weird number. I'm guessing the following:
256 gb ssd + 128 gb ssd + 32 gb ssd = 416 gb ssd
Mutant SSD!
Stetson @ Sep 11th 2007 2:50PM
Just a guess, but I think that this is a 416GB (gigabit) drive. Flash chips are commonly measured in GB. 416GB divided by 8 is 52Gb (gigabytes).
Jinky Williams @ Sep 11th 2007 3:01PM
@Stetson:
I believe that you've got GB and Gb reversed. I think "B" is bytes and "b" is bits.
But good thought on checking that. Internet providers like to play that game all the time. That would suck if other mediums adopted marketing things in "b"s instead of "B"s.
Steele @ Sep 11th 2007 8:19PM
