Internet2 prepped for 100Gbps capacity

Well it will still be vulnerable to a man, a match, and a mattress, but starting in January, the private Internet2 will begin offering 100Gbps bandwidth in 10Gbps chunks over its fiber optic network. The tech behind these ridiculous speeds -- known as Dynamic Circuit Network -- is reportedly complete as of today, with a wrap party being held at the consortium's Fall Member Meeting in San Diego. Of course researchers will naturally tire of those 10Gbps pipes rather quickly, which is why Internet2 is already working on ramping up the bitrate to between 20Gbps and 100Gbps per line. We'd go into more detail, but our employer-supplied 1,000 hours of free dial-up are just about tapped out...

Finland, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong all offer 100Mbps internet speeds. The United States is listed 16th on the world's speed charts.

Dig around on Google, you'll find the numbers. Or just go shopping in those respective countries (more are added all the time too).

I don't know if you're serious... but, 3Mbps means 3 Megabits per-second... a Mega bit is a million bits... 8 bits, is a byte, 1000 bytes, is a kilobyte and 1000 kilobytes, is a Megabyte... your average song is 4 megabytes... which is 32,000,000 bits... or, 32 Megabits...
Now... a giga bit... is 1 billion bits... which is 125 Megabytes... and we're talking 100 gigabits here, at 10 gigabit chunks? thats 1.250 Gigabytes per second, transfer rate... While you, on a 3 Megabit connection are only managing 375 Kilobytes per second.
Now, I'm not sure if all this techno-jargon makes any sense to you, or even if I got my conversions dead on... but, if not, I still know I'm in the general ballpark... So, hopefully that answers your question about how much of a speed boost you'd be getting.

Cool Comparison but your numbers are off a bit. Computers Work in Base 2 not 10. So a 1 Kbyte is 2^10 Bytes = 1024 Bytes (close to 1000 but not exactly) and MB is 2^20 Bytes = 1024 Kbytes or 1048576 Bytes or 8388608 Bits.
Now MBits is not standard some people take it to mean 2^20 bits or 10^6 bits. In the computer worlds it is always 2^of something just the nature of being binary.
This is why when you buy a hard drive the number you see on the box is rarely the same as the number your computers displays.
With all that said a 3 Mbit connections is incredibly fast (Using base 2 Math because that is what I like) Your 3 Mbit connection is runing at 384 KBytes Per second. Or about a novel every 2.5 Seconds, and an average song every 10 Seconds.
In comparison in that same 2.5 Seconds on a 100 Gbit connection, you can download One encyclopedia , and a couple of DVDs.

3mbp/s as he said is roughly 400kb/s
a song downloaded off itunes with a bitrate of (for the sake of things) is 192kb/s
so for every one second of downloading, you get roughly two seconds of song, so two minutes for a four minute song at the maximum theoretical speed (assuming the guys above me are any right.. i'm very busy but i thought i'd try to help)

1250 gigabytes per second.. (FUCKING FAST AS HELL)
think of well over 200 (probably pushing 250) dvd's. in ONE second.
you can't even find torrents to download that quickly so, basically it's like (assuming you have some dvd's, games, and pictures, videos and music in your house) being able to download EVERYTHING you've ever made on your computer/games console etc. etc. in about a second. literally.

it's quite fucking fast to say the least.

Physically impossible. It takes way longer than that for light to cross the continent. For example, NYC to LA is (according to http://www.mapcrow.info/Distance_between_New_York_US_and_Los_Angeles_US.html) is 2443.79 miles straight line. Light in a vacuum takes 13.1187382 milliseconds to go that far.

So, 13 ping is your best-case scenario between those two locations.

I bet there will be a way to use it for illegal purposes even though it is intended for education. I know i have access to web space through my college. i can easily upload an illegal copy of a movie (let's say) and someone can download it if i give them the link. So if my college super-upgrades to this Internet2 then i can upload a movie and post a link online and people can d/l it.
(i'd probably get caught by my school real quick though) but its doable.

large universities already have this. anyone ever hear of i2hub? it was a huge napster pretty much, but only could use it when you were at school, on their connection but you could trade songs, movies, porn, whatever through any other school on an i2 network.

I2Hub was run on the Abilene network, created by the Internet2 group, which has a 10Gbps backbone and 100Mbps connectivity between each node. With recent network changes they are implementing, the Abilene name will be dropped in favour of just The Internet2 Network, and the speeds mentioned in the article will be achieved. Being able to request 10Gbps on demand per line is a significant step up from 100Mbps.
