For the foreseeable future (IMHO), this is definitely the solution. Just stick with 1.0.2 and continue developing apps for it. Otherwise, its definitely a losing battle.

Since 1.0.2 doesn't have any super super major bugs, I'd say it's okay to continue using 1.0.2 for a LONG time to come.

There are adventurous, knowledgeable, intrepid souls (who know what the heck they are doing) that go forth and download that upgrade so that they may make better the lot of the apple fanboy. To these fine people we salute and give many of the fine mad props! Others less skilled and brave, however are advised against such exercise.

There is a difference between grasping a rope and leaping into the pit of the unknown and simply falling in ass over teakettle because you were busy texting someone and weren't looking where you were going.

In all fairness it is expected these days for upgrades to generally be good things. Like it or hate it, the iPhone was one of the biggest, most anticipated gadgets this year. There is a lot of controversy surrounding it, with the unlocking/hacking/bricking, so you can expect lots of posts about it.
