HP launches new low-power PCs, recycling program

HP unveiled a couple new desktops, a new monitor and a slick recycling program in China Taiwan today, and our boys from Engadget Chinese were on the spot just as you'd expect. The HP Pavilion S3260 low-power desktop has a peak power consumption of just 45W but still rocks an Athlon X2 BE-2350 dual-core processor, 256MB NVIDIA 8400GS graphics, 1GB of RAM, a 320GB disk, a multi-format memory card reader, a dual-layer burner and three years of on-site support for an estimated price of NT$29,900 yuan ($3,982 $917). HP was also showing off the 24-inch 2308 LCD, which pivots from portrait to landscape, and the Pavilion m9090 multimedia computer, which sports an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2GB of RAM, a 500GB disk, and 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT graphics, for the insane price of NT$49,900 yuan ($6,646 $1531). Topping it all off is the recycling program, in which HP will take in five old PCs and "re-assemble" them into a new PC to be donated to disadvantaged families. Considering the prices of HP's new PCs, we're assuming everyone in China qualifies as "disadvantaged," so here's hoping that program gets up to speed soon. No word on when we'll see these hit the States, but we'll pretty certain those of you looking to drop six grand on a machine can find other options.

Update: Sorry, got some signals crossed through machine translation -- these are launching in Taiwan, and the prices are in Taiwanese dollars, not yuan, which explains a lot.

I think that's in Taiwan, not China. The currency is also Taiwan dollars, not Chinese Yen.

Hey Nilay... You made a big mistake on the article.. I read mandarin.. It says Taiwan on the backboard not China, two completely different country, I know some Taiwanese people.. They will not be happy if you confused them with China(PRC). Taiwan(ROC) is a democratic country allied to the US, but China...=Communism...

I hate to say it, but if you can't read those Chinese characters on the board behind the computers, please do not write unconfirmed/false information to engadget.com readers. That truly hurt your credibility. At least, next time please try to confirm with your information source.
On the board it says: HP Taiwan's first low-power PC...blah blah blah..
And the price is in New Taiwan Dollars. 29900 NTD is about $915 USD but not $3982 as you posted to the readers.
FYI: the "yuan" mentioned in the post, please check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_yuan for more information.
And China uses simplified Chinese characters but not the traditional Chinese characters (used ONLY in HK and Taiwan) shown behind the girl.

I'm sure 45W is possible. The last system that I built and measured power usage was an AMD X2 5200, all-in-on MB/onboard gfx, 80plus PSU, 1 hdd, 1 dvd. That ran around 45W idle, and about 80W loaded, so I'm sure with lower specs and energy efficient hardware peak usage could come down to the 45W range.
