My phone already has GPS, so I want a PDA to use as an organizer and a media player. I've found I kill batteries too quickly with all-in-one devices, so I want discrete units that allow me to leave the PDA/PMP at home when I don't want to carry it around.

/Helio Drift - off contract (plays media pretty well, and gets me to my e-mail, myspace, and ebay when I need them)
/iPaq 1945 - don't knock it, SD cards are so cheap I can carry around dozens of full length movies. I was at the Web 2.0 Summit last week and saw Nokia's latest entry into the PDA market. I was shocked to learn that their new "pocket computer" didn't include telephony in the equation. And if you could buy an iPod touch which does pretty much the same thing in a much sexier, more graceful package, why would anyone buy an iPaq, or a Nokia for that matter?

With all the phone/computer devices out there, is there really a market for one (or in this case, now two) devices that don't have telephony features, other than wi-fi? I think not. These things are going to die a fast death.

No one wants to carry around two devices anymore when there are too many one that can do it all. HP and Nokia are trying to ressurect a dead product group. The PDA is dead, long live the I-can-do-anything phone.

If you're looking for some new good ideas, technology and otherwise, check out my blog, I'm just getting started, but I'd love some feedback:

http://mygoodidea.wordpress.com.

Brainwave

Comments on iPaq 210 shipping on Friday?

100% agree. I bought a iPaq in February, but ended up replacing it a couple of weeks ago with a HTC TyTn. It does all my pocket PC did but means I dont have to carry around my phone separatly.

Joe_Templeman

Comments on iPaq 210 shipping on Friday?

No way would I buy this, I used to be a very happy iPaq user until I had to deal with their support—it's frankly very dismal. I doubt I'll every get another HP PDA again and it's made me consider not buying any HP product ever again.

So here's the 30 second version. The CF card reader on my hx2795 stopped working about 90% of the time (I checked multiple quality SanDisk Ultra II/III cards and they all work everywhere else) and I was experiencing a lot of instability, especially with audio players. I talked with support and they were great, walked me through the firmware updates (which I had already done) and then asked me to send it in. I got a email and a phone message a couple of days later that they couldn't find anything wrong with it and sent it back.

When I called them they told me they hadn't found any problem with the CF card reader. I asked them about the stability issue and the tech support person I had talked to didn't even pass this complaint on to them.

Got it back and sure enough, still had problems with it.

I waited a while because I'm so dependent on this device but I just sent it back to them again. I gave them detailed instructions to test it before wiping the device and to call me before they shipped it back again. Sure enough they called, but they had wiped the device because they automatically do that if there's a single 3rd party program on it. Now in the past I've noticed that it works most of the time after a reset and then starts to fail after a week or two (even without adding applications). Sure enough they couldn't find anything wrong and wanted to send it back. I talked with a manager and explained the problem to him and he said he'd recommend that they send me a replacement. A day later I get an email saying it's on the way back. I'm currently waiting for the problem to come back up without changing any of the settings or adding any apps to it but I'm not going to be happy sending it in a third time.

Here's what really ticked me off though.

First, I learned that they pretty much don't give a crap about you if you install anything on the device, it's a phone right, it's not a Pocket PC or a Windows Mobile device right? Oh wait, that's Apple's line.

Second, they don't support CF cards over 1GB, this didn't actually apply to me as my primary card is only 1GB but nowhere on their site does it mention this limit and when I spoke to sales they told me they didn't know of a limit and had to direct me to support to get an answer. Nice, you wouldn't want to mention that to people before they buy now would you?

Finally, their support sucks.

I don't mean to go on a flame war here to much, I love my iPaq when it works, it's a wonderful device. But because it's so good it's very hard for me to give it up for a week and a half to send it to support, to have them do this two me twice with no fix is crazy. I really wish I'd been treated better because I'd be a very happy customer right now, but at this point I can't recommend them to anyone else.

Chris White

Comments on iPaq 210 shipping on Friday?

How does it feel writing so much and nobody caring?

Joe_Templeman

Comments on iPaq 210 shipping on Friday?

Pretty good actually ;-) I needed to write that up and it's not like that many people read all of these, nevertheless my comment.
