A big factor in the price drop was the fact that they are saving money on the cost of producing the system by cutting out the hardware backwards compatibility. They did replace it with software backwards compatibility which isn't as good but it will still allow you to play most of the PS2 library on the PS3. I personally don't see any problem with Sony diversifying their PS3 lineup. For the people who want a cheap system/bluray player and don't care that much about PS2 compatibility go for the cheap system. For the people who do care about the PS2 compatibility, you'd better get off your ass and buy one of the models with the hardware backwards compatibility before Sony stops making them.
