Buffalo's out tooting its own horn today, as the AirStation Wireless-G MIMO Performance Router claims to be the "first commercial wireless router to come with DD-WRT firmware pre-installed." Aimed squarely at the SMB and SOHO market, the WHR-HP-G54DD (WHR-HP-G54 pictured) is the first device to emerge from the firm's partnership with NewMedia-NET. Of note, this device features five QoS levels to prioritize traffic, optimized link state routing (OLSR), a data transfer application with VPN functionality, PPTP protocol support, WMM and DDNS, and a bevy of management applications including remote network status logging, remote web management via HTTPS and web-based backup / restore. If all this sounds like your cup of tea, you can pick one up now for £41.70 ($86), and you can check out the full (and we mean full) list of specifications right there in the read link.

DD-WRT FTW! But seriously I have DD-WRT on my WRT54G and it really is the best router out there with it!

I run DDWRT v23 on my Buffalo WHR-HP-G54, and aside from my XBOX thinking that NAT isn't open when it is, the stuff works great. Incredible firmware, used to run it on my WRT54G before the unit died after 5 solid years of service.
I wonder if you'll still be able to increase your radio's transmit power in the commercial version, might piss off the FCC. Running mine at 125mw is the only way it'll reach the whole house / yard!

For your Xbox, have you tried placing it in the DMZ? I had problems putting it in the DMZ with v23 (it would work for a while and after a month or two the Xbox would report moderate NAT again). However, it seems to be working fine since v24 RC3, I suggest you try it.

Like DWells55 said above, putting your Xboxs' IP address in the DMZ works quite well.
I had some connection issues (dropped connection, etc.). Once I popped it in the DMZ, it was smooth sailing.
Brad @ Oct 31st 2007 8:08PM
Can't - I run several servers through this connection that must be addressable from outside the network.
I haven't tried just plain old port forwarding though, I'll look into that when I get home.

i have 3 xbox 360s and i was wonderig if put all there ips in the dmz would i still be able to prioritize the traffic to them? i do a lot of p2p and the only thing that works well is my dlink gaming router.. but unfortunally that router doesn't have the functionallity of ddwrt.. and does this pre installed ddwrt router have decent hardware for massive p2p and gaming ?
ToniCipriani @ Oct 31st 2007 8:14PM
For this model you can't push it past 85mW, or else you'll burn its built-in amplifier.

Awesome - finally somebody officially ships the best modem/router software with their hardware. It's amazing it took so long.
Running Tomato on a WRT54GL(*). Best ever. Beats the panties off any other router web interface you have seen.
I think all routers should ship with Tomato, not the crapola ca. 1995-era clunky web interfaces they come with now.
(*) 'L' for Linux at the end is important - the plain WRT54G doesn't work w/ open source firmware anymore
jus10 @ Oct 31st 2007 7:34PM
Yes, I actually have this exact router (sans the DD) running Tomato and it runs perfectly. And tomato is far and away easier to use than the stock buffalo firmware. Its a beautiful thing :)
Wesburl @ Oct 31st 2007 6:28PM
I just wet myself.....
The whole "XBOX thinking that NAT isn't open when it is", is just the 360 not knowing what it is talking about (I presume you meant 360). Mine thinks its Moderate when I have it on the DMZ... haha
But yea DD-WRT is AWSOME, and I also hope they do not tone down its functionality as well... Although Buffalo's firmware is much better than Linksys's pos firmware in my experiences, but the hardware perfroms great when DD-WRT is flashed over.

Of course, the only problem is that it can't be sold in the US at the moment, thanks to the CSIRO injunction against the sale of Buffalo kit here.

DaPhatty @ Oct 31st 2007 10:24PM
Wow, I can't believe there is an injunction against Buffalo. I'm glad I bought three WHR-HP-G54 routers during the summer. I'll have some backups in case I have some sort of hardware failure. :)

Pat, I'd like to buy a vowel...

I've been running tomato firmware on my $25 Buffalo WHR-G54S for awhile now. Couldn't be happier and no overpriced nonsense to get it.
Eric Porter @ Nov 1st 2007 1:03PM
My old Linksys wireless B router kept crashing every couple of days. I tried every firmware version available. A year ago, I bought the WHR-HP-G54, installed DD-WRT, and it's been running for a year without problems! The original buffalo firmware couldn't even detect my Comcast connection.
nichole @ Nov 17th 2007 6:45PM
I just got a Buffalo router that has this firmware installed. For the life of me, I cannot get this thing to work! I called Buffalo Tech support and since it has this firmware on it, the warranty is voided and they won't help me. Can ANYONE help me? Please???
