They aren't THAT lazy/bad...

It's no workout like a bike, but it's not like plopping your ass into a seat, starting the car, and pressing on the gas.

You have to actively balance yourself on a segway, not to mention you are in an upright position--much more strain than sitting down. Strain makes muscles move, muscles moving are working. So a segway is more of a workout than a car.

I would have one if I lived downtown. I see a bunch of people riding them around, and not only do they look quite fun, but I bet that I would lose a few pounds using this to get back and forth to work instead of my car. I'd also bet that I'd get home faster too.

The point of these devices aren't to make people get fatter--it's to get people out of cars and back on the sidewalks. Most people (95%) live within 30miles of everything they need. A lot (85%) live within 15miles. Half live within 5 miles of everything they need.

You are telling me that you wouldn't ditch a:

car payment, gas bill, finding parking, paying meters, traffic jams, construction, and all the other hassles of driving a car for this?

I understand about weather. I know a car would be very useful in this instance, and I can see where some areas of the country would be unable to use one of these. But for in the city? A quick trip to the store to get milk would be so much easier to just hop on your segway and get out and back.

My .02 right there.

Alexander

Comments on

The problem is a car it intended to take you a fair distance. Well beyond what is considered normal for biking. This thing is well within the range of biking\walking so yes. It is being lazy. With very specific exceptions. Say a security guard who has a couple football fields to patrol over an evening. Or a mailman who has a walking route. But for the average person...its just being fracking lazy.

John Doe

Comments on

Way to not read my comment at all.

I said that MOST people don't need to go any further than 30 miles every day. This is true. You don't need a car that CAN go 200-300 miles before it runs out of gas, when all you are doing is back and forth back to work day in and day out.

So yes, while I can see if you use your car more than that per day a segway with it's 15 mile range (less on some models) or if you live in a area with a lot of hills... But otherwise, it's all bulls**t that having a segway makes you lazy.

Alexander

Comments on

This segway seems to be one of the first to comply to proposed dutch requirements, which is that they must drive on the road NOt sidewalks, have a minimum speed, have lights and reflectors and brakes that are compliant with those of vehicles.

Wwhat

Comments on

Don't bother clicking the link to see more. I ride a bike. I walk. I rarely drive....in 2007 I drove a total of 2900 miles. I biked 6500 miles. I walked...don't know how many miles. I rode my Segway 1500 miles. They all have a purpose but I'll stick to why I paid $5K for a "toy". If I need to be at an appointment or work and it's 10 miles away and the weather is nice, what do I do? If I walk or ride my bike, I get there all sweaty. If I drive, I feel like a loser driving 10 miles on a beautiful day. But if I Segway, I enjoy the day....I don't worry about traffic jams, I don't pollute, and I don't arrive all sweaty. I love the technology. I was never designed to replace the bike but it was somewhat designed to replace the feet. A high percentage of Segway owners have MS and consequently can barely walk if at all. When presented with a shopping mall, they must swallow their pride and use a wheelchair. Many have found the Segway to be the greatest invention. They no longer have you looking down at them in a wheelchair or them looking up at you. They can now see eye to eye. They can't walk like you and me but they can get around in a Segway, which is perfectly legal in a mall by the way.

So now we can all get back into our cars and as we sit in bumper to bumper traffic steaming, we can make fun of the Segway person gliding by you.

James Drivas
