iPhone 1.1.2 goes global tomorrow
Pocket-lint just came away from a meeting with Apple in the UK with the news we've been expecting: Apple will release their v1.1.2 firmware globally with the UK and German iPhone launch on Friday. Right, the same version which T3 says plugs the jailbreak exploit. Remember kiddies, the update, if true, will be optional. Just how important are voice memos and a disk-use mode to you anyway at the expense of all your other hacked applications?

wow the disk-use mode will surely be a nice thing. if im right. iphone can be a flash drive?
Sneakz @ Nov 8th 2007 6:27AM
Your right about the optional thing but remember, when your iPhone or iPod touch friggs up and you have to restore it, you can't restore 1.1.1, you have to use 1.1.2. That is not optional.
llama @ Nov 8th 2007 6:29AM
Nope, you can always restore with an .ipsw package, using Ctrl + click on update
llama @ Nov 8th 2007 6:35AM
hmm actually I think that was Alt + click.
my bad ^^

Shift+click on PCs - there's ALWAYS a choice!

I'm sure the hackers will be able to use the disk-mode to their advantage
t-bone @ Nov 8th 2007 6:41AM
Disk mode would be freaking sweet. I can't wait to leave my thumb drives at home.
Paris @ Nov 8th 2007 7:06AM
But you can wait to carry a USB cable around?
jason Hendricks @ Nov 8th 2007 6:55PM
anyone know if you will beable to transfer files over wifi, so you don't need a cable?
Sean @ Nov 8th 2007 7:34AM
No matter how many times you remind them, there are still going to be a tremendous amount of users with hacked phones upgrading the firmware. It's inevitable.
nickels @ Nov 8th 2007 7:39AM
isnt the French ones unlocked to all networks? wouldnt the hackers be able to get that firmware on other iphones? just change the language file??
just a thought
bifi @ Nov 8th 2007 7:49AM
Hmm... with the iPhone hacked, you have access via SCP to the Filesystem.
Ok, you always need a WiFi in your Network to have access to your data, and SCP isn't probably the fastest, but it works! And you don't need a USB cable :)

Is it a certainty that disc mode will be added? If so, then hell yeah. I haven't tried to jailbreak my shiny new iPhone yet, but the lack of disc mode makes it very tempting.
If they added that feature now, it would make waiting till Feb. for third party apps soooo much easier.
Arthur @ Nov 8th 2007 10:04AM
What do you mean by february? how do you know they will be allowed by then or are you assuming a jailbreak will be released by then?
Miranda Kali @ Nov 8th 2007 10:09AM
February is when Apple releases their SDK for the iPhone...Truth be told, I suppose we'll have to wait a month or two after THAT to see any really good third party apps.

Stupid Updates!!! wheres ichat? wheres the option to download files from safari? Only Reason iPhone is still alive is because of hackers. Thankyou hackers for not letting me regret for spending 499.99 on a phone.
ml12 @ Nov 8th 2007 11:32AM
Actually, disk mode and voice memos are pretty much the only things I want besides Netradio, flash, and cut & paste, maybe ebook reader. I have yet to see a single 3rd-party app that excites me enough to jailbreak. Can anyone tell me what is so great?
ch0rx @ Nov 8th 2007 11:29PM
one app i use a lot is iflickr :) when you take a pic it automatically uploads it to your flickr account
Scott @ Nov 8th 2007 2:26PM
T-Mobile, no contracts.
ml12 @ Nov 8th 2007 3:33PM
What is so great about t-mobile?
phoomp @ Nov 8th 2007 3:44PM
It offers an alternative to AT&T. It may not be any better, it may even be worse, but at least it offers choice.
powermike81 @ Nov 15th 2007 3:25AM
ARE YOU SERIOUS? There are so many good apps now...the NES rom app...Apollo which allows you to use MSN and ICQ. Summerboard and customize to totally change your iphone including icons..and the ugly black background. Ebay watcher. Iflickr...for pic sharing. Lockbox.. stores personally info. A tonne of games(considering the standard iphone has none). The list goes on.
Add to that the ability to use any network without contracts.
WHY WOULD YOU NOT WANT TO JAILBREAK YOUR IPHONE?
Andrew Magliozzi @ Nov 8th 2007 2:11PM
Boom... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8L39UwOS-Y
maverick @ Nov 8th 2007 12:29PM
i was going to buy a iphone today (kinda last minute i guess) and do the whole unlock thing. you think the iphones in apple stores are already updated w/ 1.1.2? or should it be fine?
Andrew @ Nov 8th 2007 12:55PM
I like the VNotes app on my hacked phone. So disk use is the only real feature here and I would rather carry a thumb drive than deal with a proprietary USB sync cable.
matt byrne @ Nov 8th 2007 2:33PM
This is the gayest thing Apple have had the nerve to release. It's limited as an iPod, it's got an outdated camera, it costs a bomb and it's locked to 02. Way to go, Apple. My Sony Ericsson phone suits me, my iPod suits me. Gotta do more than that to get my money.
ml12 @ Nov 8th 2007 3:33PM
What are the hinted 'new features' besides languages and o2 wi-fi??
Brad @ Nov 8th 2007 4:05PM
This sure feels like a lot of updates to this product...was it not finished when they released it? Or are you (the user) trading minor feature additions for a tighter lock-down on the phone with each update?
Scott @ Nov 8th 2007 7:06PM
Ok, there's been lots of Apple bashing on the iphone, and some of it much deserved, but are you SERIOUSLY going to complain about phone software that has the possibility to be updated often and *painlessly* by the end user? How is that a bad thing? With most (if not all) phones on the market now, if you discover a bug, no matter how annoying, you have no choice but to live with it until you buy a new model!
Taking your phone to your service provider and begging the clueless clerks there to update your phone is both unlikley to happen and not even close to comparable as downloading an update yourself on your home computer.

Just wondering guys if I go out tomoro and buy an iphone with 1.1.2 on board, can I go and downgrade that to 1.1.1? How would i do that? If i got it to 1.1.1 can i unlock that? Cheers
Sam @ Nov 8th 2007 9:25PM
here's something you guys might have forgotten. There's a voice recording application that you can download on appsnap.
dylan @ Nov 8th 2007 7:46PM
does anybody knows hoq to get out of jailbreak i found pretty useless and its messing with my iphone this is a b@&$? Anybody!!!!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeeazzzzzz
Sam @ Nov 8th 2007 10:00PM
dude all u need to do is restore it. go to itunes plug in your phone. click on the iphone icon in the sidebar. that shows the options. the restore button is right there. hope i helped...
stickybit @ Nov 8th 2007 10:56PM
and....wait a few more months and an official SDK is rumored to be released. I'll stick with my jailbroken iPhone for now and update to new firmware after I start hearing reports from users.
swampduck @ Nov 9th 2007 9:13AM
so, does this have Disk Use and Voice Memo or not?
noceur @ Nov 11th 2007 1:53PM
"the update, if true, will be optional. Just how important are voice memos and a disk-use mode to you anyway at the expense of all your other hacked applications?"
This means USE the Apple update and you GET voice memos and disk-use mode. Oh great! At the expense of all the hacks and unlocked phone etc.
Is disk mode coming to the hacks anytime soon?
