I worked with a couple G4s in my video production class and I'd be damned if Final Cut Pro didn't crash on me at least once every time I went in there to work on a video, let alone have the entire OS lock up and force me to hard reboot it. Some days it was as bad as three times in a row.
Not to mention we would have numerous problems (probably mostly caused by people not knowing how to use them, which presents a huge problem to 'Macs being easier to use') where important programs like the INSTALLER were deleted. I'm a Mac AND Windows user. I guess that makes me biOSual.

All this fanboi flamewar "UR COMPUTAR IS TEH SUKC!!11 LOL " "NO U!!!!" bullcrap makes me want to jump through the screen and give *all* of you a good backhand slap upside the head. BOTH systems work equally well in some areas, and blow in others.

For the "MAKS AER TEH EXPENSEIVE ZOMFG!!!!1" types, go price up a spec for spec PC from any of the major PC manufacturers. You're probably only paying an extra $50-100 for the badge, and there's decent customer service (normally) to back it up. Apple just doesn't like playing in the low-margin low-end arena, so it LOOKS like they're outrageously priced. Granted, they get their arses handed to them in market share because of this fact, but that doesn't mean you're not getting a decent computer for your money.

For those on the "LOL UR WINHOZE CRAHSED!!!!" bandwagon, a lot of the issues come from cheap components and poorly written drivers because there isn't iron-fisted control over PC hardware like you have on the Mac side. While yes, this means that some budget computers crash when you look at them hard, it also means PC users have the chance to buy a low-end PC when even the mid-range stuff is way outside their budget. PC manufacturers have chosen to play in the budget personal computer arena, and have thereby introduced thousands more people to the world of computing than Apple systems have. Just like a cheap first car, things break left and right on the cheap PC's, but it's better than walking.

OK, you can vote me down into the abyss now. kthx.

Dirkus

Comments on The Engadget search Dashboard widget

Linux...

Greg

Comments on The Engadget search Dashboard widget

Yeah, really. Linux is great, I'm writing this in Linux right now, but Linux has it's own problems(MANY problems). When Linux works and it's all set up, you're right, it's much better than Windows or Mac but therein lies the problem. Installing it with the new Ubuntu is fairly easy(though still MUCH harder for the average joe end user) but actually setting it up so it works completely is damn near impossible for any1 without a PhD in comp sci. For example, lets look at graphics cards. Well you can go with ATI or NVidia. With ATI you have to hope for the mother of all miracles that it actually installs correctly and can run your desktop at > 640x480 resolution and even then a lot of stuff it broken(watching videos). With NVidia, it's a lot better but there's still that 50/50 chance that the whole thing gets screwed up and you have to reinstall the OS. So, no, Linux is not the answer here, not unless you REALLY know what you're doing or Ubuntu or some other package makes it much more user-friendly.

Mark

Comments on The Engadget search Dashboard widget

Actually, I've used Linux too, in fact I was using exclusively Linux for about 4 years. (Debian GNU/Linux is the one true OS, btw) I'm not real sure what you're talking about Mark. I used Nvidia cards all the time, and if I farked up building the driver, I just ended up at the CLI, and I just went back at it again. In fact I built all my own kernels, modified a little of my own software, and ran a web/database/ftp/mail/irc/webcam/shoutcast server off of a headless system stuffed under my desk next to my main PC that was another webcam server, my network storage, and my "daily driver".

The point is, you don't have to be Doctor Roboitnik to use Linux; in fact, if you know how to RTFM it's not that much more involved than Mac OS or Windows.

You know what PhD stands for anyhow, right?
